1. There are two reasons for the dispute in rankings between the United States and the People's Republic of China. The first reason is the U.N. figure for China's total area, 9,596,961 km² (3,705,407 sq mi) does not include disputed territories in China's possession.^{[masapul a dakamaten]} If the territories of Aksai Chin and Trans-Karakoram Tract, which are controlled by China but claimed by India, were added to the current UN figure for China, China's total area would be 9,640,011 km² (3,722,029 sq mi).^{[masapul a dakamaten]} Using this figure, the area of China would be greater than the U.N. figure for the area of the United States,9,629,091 km² (3,717,813 sq mi). The second reason relates to how "total area" is calculated. The figure given for the United States additionally includes coastal waters, while the figure for China does not.^{[masapul a dakamaten]} The inclusion of coastal waters is the calculation method used by the CIA World Factbook, whereas the latter is the method employed by Encyclopædia Britannica, reaching differing conclusions.
2. The UN area figure includes the largely unrecognized  Republika ti Artsakh, which has an area of 11,458 km² (4,424 sq mi) and is de facto independent from Azerbaijan.

Bhutan's entry in the CIA Factbook as of Hulio 2009 listed the area as 38,394 km² (14,824 sq mi),^[21] the same number reported by the Bhutan government in 2002.^[22] The previous CIA Factbook update as of Hunio 2009 listed the area as 47,000 km² (18,000 sq mi),^[23] close to the 46,500 km² (18,000 sq mi) figure reported by the Bhutan government in 1997.^[24]

Paammo: From 1989 to 1996, China was listed as the world's third-largest country by total area according to the CIA World Factbook.
