From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-nəj. Cognate to Tibetan ཉི་མ (nyi ma, “sun, day”), Burmese နေ (ne, “sun”) or Burmese နေ့ (ne., “day”), S'gaw Karen နံၤ (nĩ, “day”), and Nuosu ꑍ (nyip, “day, daytime”).
日
Essentially a substitute character for 入 (MC nyip, “to enter”) that preserves the expected modern pronunciation of 入; see the etymology there for more.
日
Possibly due to assimilation of 金 (kˠiɪm) and 日 (ȵiɪt̚). Note that 金 ends with /m/ in Old and Middle Chinese.

For pronunciation and definitions of 日 – see 時 (“season; time; etc.”). (This character is an ancient form of 時). |
