Kėdainiai – miestas vidurio Lietuvoje, Kauno apskrityje, abipus Nevėžio, už 51 km į šiaurę nuo Kauno. Kėdainių rajono savivaldybės ir seniūnijos centras.

Senamiestis įtrauktas į kultūros paveldo registrą kaip valstybinės reikšmės urbanistikos paminklas. Čia stovi 4 bažnyčios ir 1 cerkvė (katalikų – Kėdainių Šv. Juozapo bažnyčia ir Kėdainių Šv. Jurgio bažnyčia, taip pat Kėdainių evangelikų liuteronų bažnyčia ir Kėdainių evangelikų reformatų bažnyčia, Kėdainių Viešpaties Atsimainymo cerkvė). Prie Kėdainių geležinkelio stoties stovi Lietuvos nepriklausomybės paminklas. Svarbus pramonės (daugiausia chemijos ir maisto perdirbimo) ir susisiekimo centras. Yra vienas pašto skyrius (LT-57001).
Miesto gimtadienis švenčiamas rugpjūčio 8–10 dienomis. Vasarą taip pat švenčiamos „Agurkų šventės“ (XIX a. Kėdainių žydai pradėjo agurkų verslą).
H. Vartbergės kronikoje minima Gaydine gyvenvietė, Janas Dlugošas mini Kieidany. Vėlesni šaltiniai miestą vadina irgi įvairiai – Keidaini, Keidany, Keidony ir kt. XVII a. minima miesto lytis Kėdainys, XX a. tarpukariu – Kedainiai.
Manoma, kad miesto pavadinimas kilęs nuo asmenvardžio daugiskaitos – pavardės Kėdainis,[4] ši pavardė savo ruožtu kilusi iš veiksmažodžio kėdoti („sklaidyti, vartyti, kėtoti“).[5] Tačiau legenda byloja, kad pavadinimas kilęs nuo iš Kuršo atvykusio pirklio Keidangeno, neva įkūrusio nedidelį žvejų kaimelį.[6]
Nežinoma, kada į Kėdainių kraštą atkeliavo pirmieji gyventojai. Kad jų būta, liudija pavieniai ir dažniausiai atsitiktinai aptinkami akmens amžiaus dirbiniai: šlifuoti akmens kirvukai, įvairūs apdirbto titnago ir kaulo įrankiai.
1372 m. Kėdainiai pirmą kartą paminėti rašytiniuose šaltiniuose (H. Vartbergės kronikoje). Pasak legendos, Kėdainių pavadinimas yra kilęs iš turtingo pirklio Keidangeno, atvykusio iš Kuršo ir įkūrusio nedidelį žvejų kaimelį, vardo. Archeologiniai kasinėjimai paliudijo, kad Kėdainiai išaugo iš nedidelės žvejų ir žemdirbių gyvenvietės, kuri XIV a. pradžioje jau buvo įsikūrusi dešiniajame Nevėžio krante. To kaimelio šiaurėje augo didžiulė giria, kurioje būta pagonių šventyklos. Ją kryžiuočiai sunaikinę, o jos vietoje 1403 m. pastatę mūrinę bažnyčią. Spėjama, kad pirmasis miesto savininkas Radvila Astikaitis apie XV a. vidurį ant stataus ir vaizdingo kairiojo Nevėžio kranto pastatė dvarą. Žemiau dvaro kūrėsi miestas (kurį XV a. mini Janas Dlugošas), per kurį nuo XV a. vidurio ėjo prekybos vieškeliai iš Vilniaus į tuo laiku svarbų Žemaitijos centrą Raseinius ir iš Kauno į Rygą ir Šiaulius. Šio vieškelio pašonėje, netoli Smilgos upelio žiočių, atsirado turgaus aikštė, dabar vadinama Senąja rinka. 1520 m. jau buvo 145 gyvenamieji namai ir apie 1160 gyventojų, vykdavo turgūs ir buvo renkami turgaus mokesčiai.
1535 m. Kėdainių savininką kunigaikštį Joną Radvilą paskyrus Žemaičių seniūnu miestas tapo Žemaitijos administraciniu centru. Kėdainių ūkinę ir prekybinę veiklą pagyvino 1568 m. Gardino seime suteikta teisė plėtoti laivinę prekybą Nevėžio upe, 1581 m. Varšuvos seime įteisintas laisvas uostas besikuriančiame Skongalio priemiestyje ir 1585 m. patvirtinti nuostatai miesto amatininkams. Nuo 1574 m. valdant Jonui Kiškai, Kėdainiuose vykdavo visuotiniai Žemaičių bajorų seimeliai. Jo rūpesčiu 1590 m. balandžio 15 d. karalius Zigmantas Vaza Kėdainiams suteikė Magdeburgo teises, o kartu ir teisę rengti šeštadieninius turgus, tris metines muges, miestiečiams statyti parduotuves ir laikyti pavyzdines svarstykles, ilgio bei saiko matus. Taip pat patvirtintas ir pirmasis Kėdainių herbas su Kiškų giminės simbolika: žydrame herbinio skydo lauke pavaizduota sidabrinė pasaga su trimis auksiniais kryžiais; pasagos viduryje – dvi lašišos, nukreiptos į priešingas puses. XVI a. pabaigoje buvo pastatyta pirmoji mūrinė gotikinio stiliaus miesto rotušė.
Per 1598 m. gaisrą sudegė 196 gyvenamieji namai, o per 1600 m. gaisrą – 59. Tačiau jau 1604 m. Kėdainiuose buvo 348 gyvenamieji namai ir apie 2 800 gyventojų. Tuo laiku mieste veikė net 104 smuklės: 82 alaus, 21 degtinės ir viena midaus. Nuo 1614 m. Kėdainiai vėl priklausė kunigaikščių Radvilų giminės protestantiškosios Biržų-Dubingių šakos atstovams. Valdant Lietuvos didiesiems etmonams ir Vilniaus vaivadoms – Kristupui Radvilai ir jo sūnui Jonušui (1612–1655) – miestas išgyveno ūkinį ir kultūrinį pakilimą. XVII a. pirmoje pusėje Kėdainiuose veikė 10 amatininkų cechų, kuriems priklausė apie 300 amatininkų. Mieste veikė siuvėjų, puodžių, odminių, kalvių, audėjų, batsiuvių, dailidžių, gyvulių skerdikų cechai ir pirklių brolijos. 1627 m. rugpjūčio 24 d. Kristupas Radvila patvirtino senąsias Kėdainių miesto laisves ir suteikė naująjį herbą, kuriame panaudotos dviejų miestą valdžiusių giminių – Radvilų ir Kiškų – heraldinės figūros: auksiniame lauke juodas Radvilų erelio sparnas su koja, naguose laikančia plieninę Kiškų pasagą su trimis auksiniais kryžiais žydrame lauke.
1629 m. vakarinėje Kėdainių dalyje plytėjusiuose dvaro laukuose apsigyveno vokiečiai evangelikai liuteronai, kurie dešimčiai metų buvo atleisti nuo mokesčių. Naujame miesto rajone, pavadintame Jonušava, apsigyveno apie 80 atvykėlių šeimų. 1648 m. balandžio 28 d. Lietuvos valdovas Vladislovas Vaza Jonušavai patvirtino teisę rengti turgus, turėti savo burmistrą ir atskirą herbą. Jį sudarė žydrame lauke inicialas I ir virš inicialo geltoname lauke raudona kunigaikščio kepurė. Kėdainiuose pradėjo gyvuoti dvi juridiškai įteisintos bendruomenės: Senųjų Kėdainių, kurios pagrindą sudarė evangelikai reformatai, ir Jonušavos, arba Naujųjų Kėdainių, kurioje gyveno vokiečiai evangelikai liuteronai. Lietuvos miestų istorijoje tai antras atvejis po Trakų, kai viename mieste gyvavo dvi juridiškai įteisintos bendruomenės. Be to, 1648 m. pietinėje Kėdainių dalyje prie Knypavos turgavietės įsikūrė rusų stačiatikiai, kadangi Jonušo Radvilos žmona Marija Mogilaitė buvo stačiatikė, todėl jos prašymu Jonušas Radvila 1652 m. pietinėje Knypavos dalyje pastatydino medinę cerkvę ir prie jos įkūrė vienuolyną. Mieste gyvavo ir arijonų bendruomenė, kuri čia veikė viešai iki 1658 m., kai visi arijonai Seimo sprendimu buvo išvaryti iš Lietuvos ir Lenkijos valstybės. 1655 m. Kėdainiuose buvo apie 500 gyvenamųjų namų, per 4 tūkst. gyventojų. 1667 m. Kėdainių dvaras priklausė Vilniaus vaivadai kunigaikščiui Jonušui Radvilai (su 534 valstiečių dūmais).
Miestas buvo valdomas ir tvarkomas miestiečių renkamo Magistrato, kurį sudarė 18 asmenų: vaitas, 3 burmistrai, 4 teismo tarėjai, raštininkas, 5 šuolininkai, iždininkas, iždo raštininkas, antstolis ir cechų dekanas. Magistrato nariai galėjo būti visų tikybų ir tautybių miestiečiai, kuriais Kėdainiuose buvo tampama tik prisiekus kunigaikščiui ir Magistratui.
Prie pagrindinių kelių į Kėdainius stovėjo miesto vartai, kuriuos naktimis saugojo iš miestiečių sudarytos sargybos, o atvykusieji buvo registruojami. Visi miestiečiai privalėjo dalyvauti piniginėse rinkliavose, karinėse pratybose ir eisenose. Kunigaikščiai Radvilos rūpinosi socialinėmis miestiečių reikmėmis, todėl 1629 m. vargingiems gyventojams buvo pastatytos 3 špitolės, našlaičių namai ir ligoninė. Mieste įkurta viena iš pirmųjų vaistinių Lietuvoje. Žinoma, kad 1636 m. čia dirbo vaistininkas Elijus.
Skirtingų religinių konfesijų miestiečius saugojo 1627 m. pasirašytas taikaus sambūvio susitarimas. Jį pasirašę Kristupas Radvila ir Vilniaus vyskupas Eustachijus Valavičius pripažino evangelikų reformatų ir katalikų tikybų lygiateisiškumą.
Kėdainių klestėjimą nutraukė 1654–1660 m. karas su Rusija ir Švedija. Rusijos kariuomenei okupavus beveik visą Lietuvos Didžiąją Kunigaikštystę, 1655 m. rugpjūtį mieste prasidėjo derybos su Švedijos karaliaus Karolio X Gustavo atstovais dėl LDK pasidavimo Švedijai. Derybos baigėsi 1655 m. spalio 20 d. pasirašytu aktu, kuriuo LDK nutraukė uniją su Lenkija ir sudarė naują uniją su Švedija. Iš lietuvių pusės uniją pasirašė Jonušas Radvila.
Nuo 1659 m. Kėdainius pradėjo valdyti Jonušo Radvilos pusbrolis ir žentas, Prūsijos generalgubernatorius Boguslavas Radvila (1620–1669 m.). Jis bandė atgaivinti karo nusiaubtą miestą: suteikė naujų prekybos bei laivininkystės lengvatų, patvirtino naujus miesto valdymo ir tvarkymo nuostatus. Tačiau miesto prekyba merdėjo, o dauguma miestiečių pasitraukė svetur. 1663 m. Kėdainiuose buvo tik 40 apgyventų sklypų ir penktadalis čia anksčiau gyvenusių amatininkų. XVII a. pabaigoje atgyjantį miestą nusiaubė didelis gaisras: sudegė apie 100 gyvenamųjų namų, gimnazija ir biblioteka. 1701 m. ir 1704 m. miestas buvo apsuptas švedų kariuomenės. 1709–1711 m. mieste siautėjo maras. Per jį išmirė daug kėdainiškių ir apylinkių gyventojų. Tik nuo XVIII a. vidurio Kėdainiai pradėjo atsigauti: gausėjo gyventojų, daugėjo pirklių ir amatininkų. 1765 m. Kėdainiuose buvo apie 300 namų, per 2150 gyventojų, veikė 16 cechų.
XVIII a. pabaigoje žlugus Lietuvos ir Lenkijos valstybei visi LDK miestai neteko savivaldos, tarp jų ir Kėdainiai. 1795 m. rusų armijos generolo A. Tormasovo nurodymu buvo panaikintas miesto Magistratas. Vietoj jo Kėdainiams paskirtas teisėjas ir asesorius, kurie turėjo spręsti visų tikybų ir tautybių gyventojų bylas. Tačiau miesto savininkas Dominykas Jeronimas Radvila (1786–1813) iš dalies atkūrė ir savivaldą. Jo nurodymu miestiečiams buvo leista išsirinkti 5 asmenis, kurie privalėjo vykdyti kunigaikščio administracijos funkcijas.
1811 m. Kėdainiai atiteko grafo Pranciškaus Čapskio nuosavybėn. Jo nurodymu miestui buvo palikta savivalda. Tačiau 1817 m. Raseinių apskrities teismo sprendimu Kėdainių savivalda buvo panaikinta, o miestas tapo valsčiaus centru. 1831 m. sukilimo metu sukilėliai užėmė miestą ir įvyko Kėdainių mūšis, kurio metu daugiatūkstantinė carinės Rusijos armija nesugebėjo įveikti sukilėlių. Numalšinus 1863 m. sukilimą Kėdainių dvaras buvo konfiskuotas. Jo savininkas M. Čapskis apkaltintas sukilimo rėmimu ir ištremtas į Sibirą. 1866 m. dvaras atiteko rusų armijos generolui, karo inžinieriui grafui Eduardui Totlebenui (1818–1884). 1871 m. per šiaurinę miesto pusę nutiestas Liepojos–Romnų geležinkelis. Juo Kėdainiai buvo sujungti su kitais Rusijos imperijos miestais. 1886 m. dvaras buvo atskirtas nuo miesto, Kėdainiai vėl atgavo savivaldą.
XIX a. pabaigoje Kėdainiai buvo privatus miestelis ir dvaras Kauno apskrityje,[7] valsčiaus centras.[8] Čia buvo 674 namai, 6113 gyventojų. Daugiau nei pusė gyventojų buvo žydai. Mieste veikė 50 įvairių dirbtuvių, 140 parduotuvių. Tuo laiku Kėdainiai garsėjo arklių turgumis. Kėdainių daržininkai, daugiausia žydai, pradėjo auginti agurkus, ir nuo tada Kėdainiai garsėja kaip agurkų augintojų kraštas.
1919 m. vasario 7–11 d. prie Kėdainių vyko pirmosios nepriklausomybės kovų kautynės, kuriose žuvo kraštietis Povilas Lukšys – pirmasis žuvęs Lietuvos savanoris. Kautynės sustabdė bolševikų puolimą laikinosios sostinės Kauno link.
Nepriklausomybės metais Kėdainiai tapo apskrities centru ir buvo priskirti pirmos eilės miestų kategorijai. Miestas augo ir plėtėsi: 1923 m. Kėdainiuose buvo 7 415, o 1939 m. – 8 622 gyventojai. Tačiau 1941 m. birželio 14 d. daugelis miesto ir apylinkių gyventojų buvo ištremta į Sibirą. Tų pačių metų rugpjūčio 28 d. naciai bei jų talkininkai, sušaudę 2 076 Kėdainių žydus, sunaikino per 400 metų gyvavusią jų bendruomenę. 1944 m. liepą traukdamiesi naciai susprogdino buvusius grafo E. Totlebeno rūmus, gimnaziją, apskrities ligoninę ir banką, tiltus. 1946 m. rugpjūčio 3 d. tapo apskrities pavaldumo miestu, 1950 m. – rajono pavaldumo. Po Antrojo pasaulinio karo Kėdainiai vystėsi kaip pramonės, ypač – chemijos pramonės (1963 m. ėmė veikti chemijos kombinatas, Kėdainių biochemijos gamykla) centras, pastatytas cukraus fabrikas, grūdų produktų kombinatas, elektros aparatūros gamykla. Sparčiai augo gyventojų skaičius: 1959 m. mieste buvo 10,6 tūkst. gyventojų, o 1972 m. – 23,6 tūkst. gyventojų.
1988 metų vasarą Kėdainiuose, atvykus dviratininkų žygio kolonai, vedamai kovo 11-os akto signataro Rimanto Astrausko, įvyko Lietuvos sąjūdžio mitingas, kuriame buvo pareikalauta panaikinti Molotovo-Ribentropo paktą ir žmonės raginti siekti nepriklausomybės. Netrukus Lietuvos žalieji vedami Sauliaus Griciaus surengė protesto – valandos tylėjimo akciją SSRS karinių oro pajėgų aerodrome. 1988 metų rudenį Kėdainiuose, chemijos gamykloje įvyko pirmasis Lietuvos žaliųjų suvažiavimas. Jų pastangomis gamykloje buvo uždaryta senoji sieros rūgšties gamybos linija. Netrukus po to, Kėdainiuose žymiai sumažėjo plaučių vėžio atvejų.
Vietos savivaldos pagrindų įstatymu, priimtu 1990 m. vasario 12 d., Kėdainių rajonui priskirtas aukštesniosios pakopos savivaldybės statusas. Nuo 1990 m. kovo 24 d. vėl renkama Kėdainių rajono savivaldybės taryba. 1991 m. patvirtintas naujasis Kėdainių herbas.
2009 m. Kėdainių miestas padalintas į 11 seniūnaitijų (Babėnų, Liaudės, Naujoji, Parko, Pergalės, Radvilų, Senamiesčio, Smilgos, Statybininkų, Taikos, Žemaitės).

Miestas išsidėstęs Vidurio Lietuvos žemumos centre. Kėdainiuose į Nevėžį įteka Dotnuvėlė ir Smilga (iš vakarų pusės) bei Obelis (iš rytų pusės).
Pagrindinės Kėdainių miesto dalys yra Babėnai (šiaurėje), Janušava (vakaruose) ir Kėdainių senamiestis centre. Kitos miesto dalys yra faktiškai nedideli mikrorajonai, susiformavę iš buvusių kaimų arba pramoninių plotų.
Kėdainiai – svarbus šalyje chemijos pramonės centras. AB „Lifosa“ gaminamos mineralinės trąšos, produkcija eksportuojama į Vakarų Europos ir NVS šalis.[9]
Kėdainiuose išvystyta ir maisto pramonė. Konservų, mėsos, duonos, ledų, grūdų, cukraus įmonės dirba pelningai, jų produkcija patiekiama visos Lietuvos ir užsienio vartotojams. Taip pat yra metalo apdirbimo, odų, medienos apdirbimo pramonės bendrovių. Kėdainiuose Nepriklausomybės metais buvo įkurtas stambus UAB „Lukoil Baltija“ naftos produktų terminalas.
Kėdainių rajone sėkmingai veikia kelios žemės ūkio bendrovės. Miestas garsėja agurkų auginimo tradicijomis. Užimtumo lygis Kėdainiuose aukštas – nedarbo lygis procentais nesiekia natūralaus lygio (2006 m. buvo apie 4 proc.).
Svarbiausios pramonės įmonės yra šios:
Be to, netoli miesto, Mantvilonių ir Šingalių kaimuose įsikūrusi AB „Krekenavos agrofirma“ (mėsos gaminiai) ir UAB „Kėdainių konservų fabrikas“ (konservuotos daržovės). 2012 m. įkurta Kėdainių LEZ.

Kėdainiuose gimė:
Kėdainiuose yra 2 gimnazijos, 4 pagrindinės mokyklos, jaunimo mokykla, Kėdainių suaugusiųjų mokymo centras, Kėdainių profesinio rengimo centras, specialioji internatinė mokykla, 3 mokyklos-darželiai („Aviliukas“, „Puriena“ ir „Vaikystė“). Yra Kauno kolegijos Kėdainių Jonušo Radvilos studijų centras, kuriame įgijamas aukštasis neuniversitetinis išsilavinimas, kalbų, dailės, sporto ir muzikos mokyklos.
Yra 4 vaikų darželiai. Veikia Kėdainių Mikalojaus Daukšos viešoji biblioteka.
Kėdainių mieste yra profesionalus krepšinio klubas „Nevėžis BC“, žaidžiantis aukščiausioje šalies lygoje – LKL. Rungtynės vyksta Kėdainių arenoje, Kėdainių priemiestyje Vilainuose.
Miestas turi taip pat vieną profesionalią futbolo komandą „Nevėžį“, kuri žaidžia LFF I Lygoje. Rungtyniauja Kėdainių stadione, kuris 2008–2009 m. buvo kapitališkai renovuotas.

Leidžiami du laikraščiai – „Kėdainių mugė“ (trečiadieniais ir šeštadieniais)[22] ir „Rinkos aikštė“. Nuo 1926 m. leistas „Kėdainių garsas“ 2013 m. nustotas leisti (tai buvo vienintelis nepriklausomas vietinis žiniasklaidos šaltinis). Veikia Kėdainių Krašto Televizija (KKTV). Veikia naujienų portalas kėdainiečiams – www.kedainietis.lt, kuriame publikuojama didžiausia Kėdainių fotogalerija. Per radiją transliuojami savivaldybės tarybos posėdžiai.
Per Kėdainius eina Šiaulių – Vilniaus geležinkelis. Į rytus nuo miesto praeina A8 Panevėžys–Aristava–Sitkūnai (E67 Helsinkis-Talinas-Ryga-Panevėžys-Kaunas-Varšuva-Vroclavas-Praha ) kelias. Taip pat krašto keliai:

Miesto pakraštyje yra Daukšių buv. karinis aerodromas.
Mieste yra kultūros centras, Kėdainių krašto muziejus, veikiantis nuo 1921 m., vienas seniausių Lietuvoje. Nuo 2000 m. rugsėjo mėnesio persikėlė į restauruotas buvusio Kėdainių karmelitų vienuolyno (XVIII–XIX a.) patalpas. Svarbiausieji muziejaus eksponatai: XVII a. dokumentai, kunigaikščio Jonušo Radvilos (1612–1655 m.) įkapinis rūbas, XVII a. drabužių detalės iš Kėdainių Evangelikų reformatų bažnyčios kriptų, ragų baldai iš Apytalaukio dvaro, gotikinė XV a. šv. Jono Krikštytojo skulptūra, dievdirbio Vinco Svirskio kryžiai. Muziejui priklauso:
Dabartinis Kėdainių senamiestis užima 86 ha ploto. Nuo reformacijos laikų išlikęs unikalus išplanavimas, gatvių ir aikščių tinklas, pastatai, archeologinis sluoksnis. Urbanistiniu požiūriu senamiestis yra ketvirtas Lietuvoje, išlaikęs savita XVII–XVIII a. suformuotą vaizdą. Jame surastos XIV–XV a. medinės gyvenvietės (trečias atvejis po Vilniaus ir Kernavės, kai randamos medinių gyvenviečių liekanos). 1969 m. Kėdainių senamiestis paskelbtas respublikinės svarbos urbanistikos paminklu, taip pat archeologijos, architektūros ir istorijos paminklu.
XVII a. valdant įtakingiems didikams Radviloms, miestas buvo planuojamas ir tvarkomas Europos miestų pavyzdžiu. Tai buvo kultūrinis ir religinis protestantizmo centras – veikė kelios bažnyčios, gimnazija, spaustuvė, aktyvūs intelektualai. Kėdainiai tapo ypatingu urbanistiniu-ekonominiu reiškiniu, kadangi jame susiformavo 6 prekybinės aikštės (atskiruose konfesiniuose kvartaluose). XVII ir XVIII a. veikė 10–16 amatininkų cechų.
Mieste vyravo tolerantiška politika kitataučių ir kitatikių atžvilgiu – 6 religinės bendruomenės turėjo įvairių laisvių, privilegijų ir nuolaidų. Čia buvo ne tik katalikai, protestantai ir stačiatikiai, bet sugyveno ir žydai, vokiečiai, net škotai (didžiausia bendruomenė Baltijos jūros regione).
