Gelaran Pahlawan Nasional Indonesia diberikan kepada mereka yang berjasa kepada Negara Republik Indonesia serta mereka yang berjuang dalam proses untuk kemerdekaan Negara Republik Indonesia.[1] Sehingga 10 November 2006, telah ada 138 tokoh yang ditetapkan oleh Pemerintah Indonesia sebagai Pahlawan Nasional Indonesia. Ia selepas kematian diberikan oleh Kerajaan Indonesia untuk tindakan yang disifatkan sebagai wira, yang ditakrifkan sebagai "perbuatan sebenar yang boleh diingati dan dicontohi untuk sepanjang zaman oleh rakyat yang lain" [lower-alpha 1] atau "perkhidmatan luar biasa memajukan kepentingan negara dan rakyat".[lower-alpha 2][2] Kementerian Hal Ehwal Sosial memberikan tujuh kriteria yang individu perlu memenuhi, seperti berikut:[2]
Pencalonan menjalani proses empat langkah dan mesti diluluskan di setiap peringkat. Satu cadangan telah dibuat oleh penduduk umum dalam suatu bandar atau kabupaten kepada Datuk Bandar atau pemangku raja, yang kemudiannya perlu membuat permintaan kepada gabenor di wilayah itu. Gabenor itu kemudian membuat cadangan kepada Kementerian Hal Ehwal Sosial, yang ke hadapan kepada presiden, yang diwakili oleh Lembaga Hakmilik (Dewan Gelar); [2] lembaga ini terdiri daripada dua ahli akademik, dua orang daripada latar belakang ketenteraan, dan tiga orang yang pernah menerima anugerah atau gelaran. Mereka yang terpilih oleh presiden, yang diwakili oleh Lembaga, diberi gelaran pada satu majlis di ibu negara Indonesia Jakarta [2] Sejak tahun 2000, majlis tersebut telah berlaku pada awal November, serentak dengan Hari Pahlawan Indonesia.[3]
Rangka kerja undang-undang bagi gelaran, pada mulanya digelar Pahlawan Kemerdekaan Nasional, telah ditubuhkan dengan pengumuman Presiden Nombor 241 daripada 1958. Gelaran ini pertama kali dianugerahkan pada 30 Ogos 1959 untuk ahli politik bertukar penulis Abdul Muis, yang telah meninggal dunia pada bulan sebelumnya.[4][5][6] Gelaran ini telah digunakan untuk sepanjang pemerintahan Sukarno. Apabila Suharto meningkat kepada kuasa pada pertengahan 1960-an, gelaran yang diberikan nama sekarang. Gelaran khas di tahap Pahlawan Nasional juga telah dianugerahkan. Pahlawan Revolusi telah diberikan pada tahun 1965 hingga sepuluh mangsa gagal rampasan kuasa Gerakan 30 September, manakala Naib Presiden Sukarno dan bekas Mohammad Hatta telah diberi gelaran Pahlawan Proklamasi pada tahun 1988 untuk peranan mereka dalam membaca Pengisytiharan Kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia.[7][4][6]
Seramai 156 lelaki dan 12 wanita telah dianggap sebagai wira negara, baru-baru Bernard Wilhelm Lapian, Mas Isman , I Gusti Ngurah Made Agung, Ki Bagus Hadikusumo dan Muhammad Yasin pada 2015.[8] Pahlawan datang dari semua bahagian kepulauan Indonesia, dari Aceh di barat ke Papua di timur. Mereka mewakili pelbagai etnik, termasuk orang asli Indonesia, etnik Cina, dan Serani. Ia termasuk perdana menteri, gerila, menteri-menteri kerajaan, tentera, royalti, wartawan, dan uskup.
Senarai berikut pada mulanya dibentangkan mengikut abjad; kerana perbezaan konvensyen penamaan budaya, tidak semua entri disusun mengikut nama keluarga. Senarai ini lagi diurutkan dengan tahun kelahiran, kematian, dan pengiktirafan.
