In the Indian state of Punjab, Punjabi Hindus make up approximately 38.5% of the state's population and are a majority in the Doaba region. Punjabi Hindus forms majority in five districts of Punjab, namely, Pathankot, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Fazilka and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar districts.[1]

During the 1947 partition, many Hindus from West Punjab and North-West Frontier Province settled in Delhi. Determined from 1991 and 2015 estimates, Punjabi Hindus form approximately 24 to 35 per cent of Delhi's population;[a][b] based on 2011 official census counts, this amounts to between 4,029,106 and 5,875,779 people.

Following the large scale exodus that took place during the 1947 partition, there remains a small Punjabi Hindu community in Pakistan today. According to the 2017 Census, there are about 200,000 Hindus in Punjab province, forming approximately 0.2% of the total population. Much of the community resides in the primarily rural South Punjab districts of Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalpur where they form 3.12% and 1.12% of the population respectively, [4][5]while the rest are concentrated in urban centres such as Lahore.[6][7]

పంజాబీ హిందువులు అన్నది హిందూ మతం అనుసరిస్తూ, భారత ఉపఖండంలోని పంజాబీ ప్రాంతంలో తమ మూలాలు కానీ, నేపథ్యం కానీ ఉన్న జనసమూహం. భారతదేశంలో పంజాబీ హిందువులు ప్రధానంగా పంజాబ్, హర్యానా, జమ్ము, చండీగఢ్, ఢిల్లీ ప్రాంతాల్లో నెలకొని ఉన్నారు. పంజాబీ హిందువులు అమెరికా, కెనడా, యుకె, ఆస్ట్రేలియా, న్యూజీలాండ్, దుబాయ్ వంటి ప్రాంతాలకు నిరంతరంగా వలసలు కొనసాగుతూ వచ్చాయి.

పంజాబ్ ప్రాంతంలో చారిత్రికంగా ఎప్పటినుంచో హిందూ మతం ప్రాచుర్యంలో ఉంది. హిందూ మతం పంజాబ్ లో విలసిల్లిన కాలానికి ఆ ప్రాంతానికి ఇస్లాం ఆగమనం కానీ, ఆ మట్టిపై సిక్ఖు మతం జననం కానీ జరగలేదు. సిక్ఖు మతపు తొలి గురువు గురు నానక్ సహా బందా సింగ్ బహదూర్, భాయ్ మతీ దాస్ వంటి ప్రముఖ సిక్ఖు నాయకులు, గురువులు అందరూ పంజాబ్ ప్రాంతానికి చెందిన హిందూ కుటుంబాలకు చెందినవారే. పలువురు పంజాబీ హిందువులు అనంతర కాలంలో సిక్ఖుమతంలో చేరారు. నిజానికి పంజాబీ హిందువులు తమ మూలాలను వేదకాలం నుంచి అన్వేషించవచ్చు.

ఆధునిక భారత పంజాబ్, పాకిస్తానీ పంజాబ్ మహానగరాలకు అత్యంత ప్రాచీనమైన హిందూ మత సంబంధ నామాలు ఉన్నాయి. అలాంటివే లాహోర్, జలంధర్, చండీగఢ్, మొదలైన నగరాల పేర్లు. భారత ప్రధానులు ఐ.కె.గుజ్రాల్, గుల్జారీ లాల్ నందా, భారత జట్టు పూర్వ కెప్టెన్ కపిల్ దేవ్, ప్రముఖ శాస్త్రవేత్త హరగోవింద్ ఖొరానా తదితరులు పంజాబీ హిందువులే.

  1. పశ్చిమ పంజాబ్ (నేటి పాకిస్థాన్)లోని గందార ప్రాంతం.
  2. పంజాబ్
  3. హర్యానా
  4. చండీగర్
  5. హిమాచల్ ప్రదేశ్
  6. ఆజాద్ కాశ్మిర్
  7. జమ్ము

రుగ్వేదంలో పంజాబ్ ను సప్తసిందూ (7 నదుల భూభాగం) గా వర్ణించబడింది.

  1. సరస్వతి నది (గాగ్రా),
  2. శతాద్రు నది (సుత్లెజ్),
  3. విపాసా నది (బియాస్),
  4. చంద్రబగా నది (చినాబ్),
  5. ఐరావతి నది (రావి),
  6. విటాస్త నది (జిలమ్),
  7. సిందూ నది.[10]
