From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s/r-kawk ~ *s/r-kwak (“outer covering, skin, bark, rind”). Cognate with 革 (OC *krɯːɡ, “leather”), Burmese ခေါက် (hkauk, “tree bark”), Tibetan སྐོག་པ་ (skog pa, “shell, peel”) (STEDT, Hill (2019)).
