Etymology
From Proto-Italic *pāgos, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂ǵ- (“to fasten, fix”). Perhaps "a space with fixed boundaries". See related terms. Compare the meaning, "region", of fīnis again perhaps of a root meaning "to fix".
