氟和不同的金屬的反應所需要條件不同。常溫下,鹼金屬可以直接與氟反應並引起爆炸,鹼土金屬也可以直接與氟發生劇烈的反應。但是鋁、鐵這樣的金屬在常溫下與氟作用,金屬表面會形成一層氟化物而阻止反應進一步發生。換言之,它們會被氟鈍化。如果要用這些金屬和氟直接反應製備氟化物,需要將它們磨成粉末。[19]貴金屬需要在300–450 °C 的溫度下才能與純氟發生反應[22]。
