蛇颈龙类在儿童与神秘动物学方面非常普及,出现在许多的儿童书籍与几部电影里,并在儒勒·凡尔纳(Jules Verne)的小说《地心游记》(Journey to the Center of the Earth)里与一只鱼龙类一起出现。然而,在凡尔纳的小说里,蛇颈龙类比牠实际体型还大,并有类似乌龟的壳。在1899年的奇特短篇小说《The Monster of Lake LaMetrie》里,一个男子的大脑被装入一个蛇颈龙类的身体里。
