釹於1885年由奧地利化學家卡爾·奧爾·馮·韋爾斯巴赫(英語:Carl Auer von Welsbach)發現。釹並不以純金屬態存在自然界中,而是與其他稀土金屬一同出現在獨居石和氟碳鈰礦(英語:Bastnäsite)等礦物中。雖然釹被歸類為稀土元素,但它在地殼中相當普遍,並不比鈷、鎳或銅稀有。釹是地殼中豐度第二高的鑭系及稀土元素,僅次於鈰。如同大多數稀土金屬,世界上大部分的商業用釹都是在中國開採的。
