Titanes (Titan, -is m., interdum Titanus -i m.; Graece Τιτάν) in mythologia Graeca sunt immortales aetatis antiquae personae, Urani et Gaeae filii. Urano autem devicto, Cronus, Titanum minimus natu, mortales immortalesque regebat (quod regnum cognomen aetatis aureae meruit) usque ad Titanomachiam, id est, bellum quod Zeus (seu Iuppiter), Croni filius, in patrem gerebat una cum Poseidone et Hade fratribus. Titanes victi in Tartarum carcerem coniecti sunt.
Hesiodus inter filios et filias Gaeae enumerat duodecim quos Urano peperit: sunt Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus, Thea, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Tethys et Cronus.[1] Eis Uranus ipse nomen Titanum dedit.[2]
