Compater[1][2] (fem. commater[2]), etiam patrinus[3], susceptor[2], pater lustricus[2], sponsor (lustricus)[4] (fem. patrina[1], matrina[3], susceptrix[5], mater lustrica[2], cum sponstrix eo sensu vix inveniatur), est qui baptismo infantis testis interest seque infanti in vita fideque adfuturum promittit.
Saepe asciscuntur compatres duo, scilicet commater et compater.
