A Gran Praza de Delft (en neerlandés: Markt in Delft) está situada nunha das zonas máis altas da cidade de Delft, na Holanda Meridional. Cos seus 6.000 metros cadrados (120 de longo por 50 de largo), unha das prazas históricas máis grandes non só dos Países Baixos, senón de toda de Europa.
Aínda que a praza cambiou a súa fisionomía ao longo dos anos (a última remodelación foi en 2004), a súa forma é a dun rectángulo case perfecto e desde hai séculos está flanquedada nos seus lados curtos polo antigo edificio do Concello de Delft, no oeste, e pola igrexa nova da cidade (Nieuwe Kerk), no leste.[1][2]
Os inicios de Delft no século XII, aínda non como vila senón como centro de comercio, tiveron lugar en torno a un antigo cemiterio, en cuxo límite oriental, que coincidiría co actual edificio do concello, se estableceu unha feira ou mercado popular. Este campo da feira estendíase ata a parte posterior da igrexa nova, onde comezaba unha zona pantanosa. Esa foi a orixe do mercado semanal de produtos básicos dos xoves, que aínda hoxe perdura (en horario de 9:00 horas a 17:00 horas).
En épocas anteriores, tamén se celebraban neste lugar dous mercados extraordinarios: un deles con motivo dunha procesión na honra de San Odulfo de Utrecht, o 12 de xuño, e o outro pola celebración de San Eloi de Noyon, o 1 de decembro. A praza utilizábase tamén para xuízos públicos, que con frecuencia acababan no campo da forca que se situaba na parte oriental, antes da construción da igrexa nova.
Para a construción desta igrexa coutáronse 34 metros da praza en 1396, aos que se lles engadiu unha franxa de 17 metros en 1421 para dedicar a cemiterio. E en 1436, o Conde Filipe de Goede cedeu o seu pazo e o resto da praza, da súa propiedade, á vila de Delft. A partir dese momento, o pazo empezou a ser utilizado como casa consistorial.
En 1484 pavimentouse a praza por vez primeira, o que levou consigo a elevación do terreo en 90 centímetros, e eliminouse o pozo de auga do que dispuña.
A nova igrexa, aínda sen finalizar nesas datas, estaba daquela flanqueada por dúas ringleiras de casas, hoxe desaparecidas, que anos antes marcaban o límite do primitivo campo da feira. A igrexa alcanzou o seu tamaño actual en 1510, sete anos despois do derrubamento dunha das dúas ringleiras laterais de casas, para a ampliación do camposanto, en 1493.
Nos traballos de mantemento de 1595 instalouse unha rosa dos ventos sobre a que en 1886 se erixiu unha estatua do escritor holandés Hugo Grotius[3]. Tanto a rosa dos ventos como a estatua seguen a ser hoxe motivos principal do centro da praza, aínda que a estatua foi posteriormente desprazada do seu lugar orixinal a outro máis próximo á igrexa.
