Gjirokastër (pronunciase [ɟɪɾokaˈstəɾ] en albanés) ou Gjirokastra (en grego, Αργυρόκαστρο, Argirókastro ; en italiano, Argirocastro; en turco, Ergiri ou Argiri ou Ergeri) é unha cidade de Albania. É a principal cidade do sur do país, e a capital da comarca e distrito homónimos. A importancia de Gjirokastër reside no feito de que é o berce dalgúns dos albaneses máis famosos, como o político Enver Hoxha ou o escritor Ismail Kadare.

A súa poboación eran duns 12.000 habitantes en 1960. Case se triplicou até aproximadamente 34.000 habitantes (2003), e rebaixouse aos 24.000 habitantes segundo estimación de 2008.[1]
Está ao pé do Mali Gjerë, no val do Drin, afluente do Vijosë (Voytsa). Está dominado polo castelo medieval, probablemente veneciano. A cidade é considerada o centro da comunidade grega en Albania.
Por outra banda, o casco vello da cidade foi declarado museo da cidade durante o réxime comunista. En 2005, a UNESCO declarou a cidade museo de Gjirokastër Patrimonio da Humanidade,[2] como un raro exemplo dunha vila otomá ben conservada construída polos propietarios. A localidade de Berat tamén forman parte dela como parte dos centros históricos de Berat e Gjirokastër.[2]
A cidade estaba preto da antiga Adrianópolis e toma o seu nome probablemente dunha tribo iliria.
Era unha posesión bizantina e levaba o nome de Argyropolis ("Cidade de Prata", grego Αργυρόπολις) ou Argyrokastron ("Castelo de Prata", grego: Αργυρόκαστρον). En 1205, converteuse no déspota de Epiro.

Pasou aos otománs (1417) baixo Baiazet I (Argiri-kasri) e foi a capital do sandjak de Arvanya; menciónase como feudo da familia Zenebissi (Zenebish); en 1506, xa pertencía ao sandjak de Avlonya.
En 1811, estivo durante un tempo en mans de Ali Tepelen. No século XIX, volveu ser a capital de sandjak co seu nome turco de Ergiri, dependente da wilayat de Ioannina e foi un centro de oposición ao dominio otomán. En 1880, acolleu a asemblea (nacionalista) de Gjirokastër.
Na guerra dos Balcáns (1912-1913), Grecia reclamou a cidade cando os otománs se retiraron, pero foi concedida a Albania polo Tratado de Londres (1913) e o Protocolo de Florencia do 17 de decembro de 1913.
En marzo de 1914, os gregos declararon a cidade estado autónomo de Epiro, que foi recoñecido polo protocolo de Corfú, pero finalmente, no contexto da Primeira guerra mundial, os gregos ocuparon a cidade (outono de 1914 ) e Korçë, e en abril de 1916 o sur do territorio autónomo foi anexionado a Grecia, até que a conferencia de paz de París o devolveu a Albania segundo o establecido en 1913.
En abril de 1939 foi ocupada polos italianos; un intento por parte de Grecia de ocupar a cidade foi de curta duración; en setembro de 1943 pasou baixo control alemán tras a capitulación de Italia; en 1944 entraron os guerrilleiros comunistas. Baixo o réxime comunista converteuse nun centro industrial.
En 2005 a cidade-museo, xunto á vila de Butrint e o casco histórico de Berat foron declarados Patrimonio da Humanidade.[2]
