1164an azaltzen da hiriaren lehen aipamena, agiri hartan Drava ibaiaren ertzean kokaturiko Castrum Marchburch gaztelua aipatzen da. Gaztelua bera Piramid muinoan kokaturik zegoen eta azpian hedatzen hasi zen merkatal hiria. 1254 urtean herri foruak jaso zituen. Rodolfo I.a Habsburgokoak 1278an Otakar II.a Bohemiakoaren dinastia garaitu zuenean Mariborrek garapen handia izan zuen bere toki estrategikoagatik.
Juduen auzoaren lehen aipamena 1277koa den arren biztanleria handiena 1410 urtean izan zuen. 1450tik aurrera krisialdi ekonomikoa iritsi zen eta 1496an Maximiliano I.ak plazaraturiko dekretu baten eraginez juduak kanporatuak izan ziren. XV, XVI eta XVII mendeetan hainbat setio izan zituen, gogorrenak Otomandar Inperioak egindakoak izan ziren 1532 eta 1683an.
Aipatzeko data 1680koa da, urte hartan Izurri Beltzak hiriaren biztanleriaren herena hil baitzuen. Orduko sarraskia oroitzen duen marmolezko eskultura dago udaletxearen aurrean.
Maribor Estiria dukerriaren parte izanik Austria-Hungariako Inperioaren barnean egon zen XX mendera arte.
1900 urtean Mariborrek Marburg an der Drau izena zeukan eta 40.000 biztanle inguru[2]. Hiriko biztanleriaren %82'3a austriar-germaniar jatorrikoa zen eta esloveniarrak %17'3a baino ez ziren, hiriaren inguruko lurretan esloveniarrak ziren nagusi. Lehen Mundu Gerra hasi zenean esloveniar asko atxilotu egin zituzten Austria-Hungariako Inperioaren etsai izan zitezkeelakoan eta komunitate bien arteko liskarrak sortu ziren. 1918an Inperioa desegitean Austriak eta Esloveniak beretzako eskatu zuen hiria. Esloveniarrek irabazi zuten eta austriar soldaduak armagabetu eta Austriara bidali zituzten.
1941eko apirilaren 8an naziek hartu zuten hiria eta esloveniarren kanporaketa masiboak hasi zituzten[3]. Asko kontzentrazio-esparrutara ere bidali zituzten. Hiri industriala izanik Bigarren Mundu Gerraren azken urteetan aliatuen bonbardaketa ugari jasan zituen. 29 eraso izan zituen eta hiriaren %47a suntsitu zen. Gerra bukatzean aleman-hiztunak kanporatuak izan ziren eta alemaniarren alde egin zuten kroaziarren hilketa masiboak gertatu ziren.
1991ean Esloveniak independentzia eskuratu zuen eta hasierako urteetan ekonomiak behea jo zuen, %25-eko langabezia tasa honen adierazle. 2004an Europar Batasunean sartu zen eta 2007an euroa eta Schengengo Hitzarmena onartu zituen. Honek ekonomia berrindartu zuen.
2000 urtean Urteko herri alpetarra izan zen eta 2012an Europako kultura-hiriburu izendatua izan zen Maribor[1].
Esloveniaren ipar-ekialdean kokaturik dago Austriarekiko mugatik hurbil. Drava ibaiak inguratzen du herria[4].
Mariborrek 11 barruti (eslovenieraz: mestne četrti) ditu. Drava ibaiak Center, Koroška Vrata, Melje eta Ivan Cankar barrutiak eta besteak banatzen ditu. Hona hemen barrutiak:
