Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *sʰaŋ, *sʰraːŋ) : semantic 木 + phonetic 倉 (OC *sʰaːŋ).
This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “The modern Sinitic meaning of "gun" (which none of the Sino-Xenic languages use; 銃 (OC *tʰjuŋs) is used instead, while 槍 retains the original "spear" meaning) supposedly stems from a shortening of 突火槍, aka the "fire lance", an early proto-gun invented around the Song dynasty.[1] As for further etymology, doesn't seem to be given etymology by STEDT, though note a vague resemblance in the Old Chinese pronunciation to Burmese လှံ (hlam, “spear”).” |
