From Middle English galery , gallerye , from Middle French galerie , gallerie , from Old French galerie , gallerie ( “ a long portico, a gallery ” ) , from Medieval Latin galeria ( “ gallery ” ) , perhaps an alteration of galilea ( “ church porch ” ) , probably from Latin Galilaea , Galilee, region of Palestine.
