From เวท (wêet, “Veda; sacred knowledge; secret knowledge; etc”) + มนตร์ (mon, “mantra”); ultimately from Sanskrit वेद (veda, “sacred knowledge; true knowledge; etc”) + मन्त्र (mantra, “mantra”), probably via Old Khmer veda (“Veda; sacred knowledge”) + mantra (“mantra”). Compare Modern Khmer វេទមន្ត (veit mŭən).
