• Synonymous with, but not always interchangeable with, and more formal than นั่น (nân). For example, คนนั้น (kon-nán, “that person”) is never used as คนนั่น (kon-nân), เพียงนั้น (piiang-nán, “to that extent”) is never used as เพียงนั่น (piiang-nân), and วันนั้น (wan-nán, “that day”) is never used as วันนั่น (wan-nân). Moreover, both terms can sometimes give different senses. Examples are อะไรนั่น (à-rai-nân, “what's that?”) and อะไรนั้น (à-rai-nán, “whatever; anything whatsoever”).
