比德

诺森布里亚的比德（天主教译圣伯达，圣公会译圣贝德，Bede，古英语中为 Bǣda 或 Bēda 。672／673年—735年5月26日），英国盎格鲁撒克逊时期编年史家及神学家，亦为诺森布里亚本笃会的修士。拉丁文著作《英吉利教会史》，获尊称为“英国历史之父”。

其一生似乎都是在英格兰北部韦尔茅斯－雅罗的修道院（英语：Monkwearmouth–Jarrow Abbey）度过。^[2]

据盎格鲁-撒克逊人的文献所记载，比德精通语言学，对天文学、地理学、神学甚至哲学都深有研究。他出生于一个贵族家庭，自幼性格孤僻。传闻就是他发现地球是圆的这个事实，此事记载于他的作品《De temporum ratione（英语：De temporum ratione）》（On the Reckoning of Time）。^[3]

由于比德所居住的修道院比邻一个庞大的图书馆^[4][5]，他利用从整个罗马帝国境内图书馆中搜集来的众多资料中，撰写完成超过四十部（据说有四十五部，不少已失传），有关历史、科学及神学的巨著。

1899年，比德由教宗良十三世尊为教会圣师，奉为圣人。

生平

几乎所有关于比德生平事迹都被包含在他的作品《英吉利教会史》的最后一章中。由于此书完成于约731年^[6]，比德暗示完成时他已59岁，由此可得出比德生于673年至675年之间。^[1][7][8]比德在书中自述他在修道院附近出生^{[9][10][1][11]}，尽管比德没有说明他的身世，但他的名字暗示他出身于贵族（ Bǣda 这个名字在当时并不常见，只出现在王族中）。^[8][12]

比德七岁时，他的家人送他去本笃会学校读书^[13]，先后受教于Benedict Biscop（英语：Benedict Biscop）与Ceolfrith（英语：Ceolfrith）门下。^[13]

后来他加入本笃会修道，三十岁时晋铎成为神父。^[8]

他在‘自修不忘工作’的原则下，潜心研究圣经，专务祈祷。圣人在他的自传里曾说：“我的整个幸福，是在读书、教授和写作之中。”从此可见他修己淑人的精神。

735年，比德突患重病，医生束手无策。他的门徒含泪围绕在病榻前朗诵经书。比德自知在世时日无多，加倍努力工作。复活节到耶稣升天节的四十天内，忙于翻译福音书，将若望福音翻译成英文；此外，还将圣依西多禄的笔记汇辑成书。

临死前夕，他整夜不睡，口述若望福音最后一章的译稿。下午三时，他请神父来代他祈祷。傍晚时，抄写员过来对他说：“还有最后一句文字没有写好。”比德口述了这句文字后，高呼道：“上主呀，你说的真对：一切都完成了！请你接受我的灵魂吧！”说完这句，瞑目安逝。

历史学

历史学上，他在703年完成《De temporibus》（英文：On Time），是一部较短的编年史。接着他在725年完成一部稍长的编年史《De tenoirum ratione》（英文：On the Reckoning of Time）。他最重要的著作，《英吉利教会史》（Ecclesiastical History of the English People）分为五卷，于731至732年间写成，从主前55-54年被罗马征服开始，追溯英国的历史，直到731年为止。

值得一提的是，该书编年法按耶稣基督降生的那一年，区分为主前（Before Christ，B.C.）与主后（Anno Domini，A.D.）。由于《英吉利教会史》的普及，使得 A.D. 成为主后通用的缩写。

圣经

此外，他一生几乎都专注在圣经注释上。最早问世的注释，约为703至709年完成使徒约翰的启示录的注释，其他著作散见于西欧的修道院图书馆中。

尽管比德常用寓意解经的方式注释圣经，他也使用圣经批判的方式，试图解决圣经内文中，看似矛盾之处。

比德使用可靠、正确、钜细靡遗，的方法，展现出他能区分事实、传统与异端的能力。在他去世后不到一百年的时间，他被赐予“可敬的”(Venerable)的封号。^[14][15]

尊崇

目前没有证据表明，在8世纪的英国，比德就被尊为“敬虔者”。其中一个原因是他死于坎特伯里的圣奥斯定 节。他后来在英国广受尊崇，他的纪念日或者是在圣奥斯定节，就是5月26日，或者是在5月27日。然而，他在英格兰以外受到尊崇，是因为博尼（Boniface）和阿尔昆（Alcuin）的努力，他们两人促成了欧洲大陆圣徒的敬虔。博尼在他传教事业中，多次写信给英国教会，他想要得到比德神学著作的抄本。阿尔昆，曾任教于一所由比德的学生埃格伯特（Egbert）在约克郡创建的学校，他称赞比德，说比德是修士们学习的榜样，这对于比德的作品在阿尔昆的朋友圈广为传播是大有帮助的。^[16] 10世纪英国修道主义复兴时期，比德的地位突显，他的敬虔影响了那个时代，到了14世纪，这种影响已经蔓延到英国的许多大教堂。沃尔夫斯坦·伍斯特主教（Wulfstan, Bishop of Worcester 约1008至1095年），是比德的特别奉献者，他在1062年为比德奉献了一座教堂，这是沃尔夫斯坦作为主教的首次奉献。^[17] 1020年，他的遗骨从贾罗移到了达勒姆大教堂，和圣徒库斯伯特林迪斯法恩在同一个墓园。1370年，比德的遗骨被转移到达勒姆大教堂的加里肋亚小教堂（Galilee Chapel）圣墓中。这个圣墓在英国宗教改革中被摧毁，但遗骨被重新被安葬在小教堂。1831年，他的遗骨被挖出来，然后被重新安葬在一个新的墓中，这个墓现在仍然还在。^[18] 至于其他遗物，约克、格拉斯顿伯里^[19] 和富尔达^[20] 这三个地方都宣称他们拥有。

1899年，比德被宣布为"教会圣师" ^[21] ，他在天主教历史上的学术地位和重要性被确认。他是唯一一个被称为“教会圣师”的英国人。^{[22] [23]} 他也是但丁《天堂》中唯一的英国人，也在众多神学家和教会圣师的长诗中被提及。1899年，为纪念他而设定的瞻礼日（庆日）被列入通用罗马历，这个瞻礼日是定在5月27日，而不是他去世的日子5月26日，那一天在当时是罗马教宗圣额我略七世的瞻礼日。而5月25日被英国圣公会和罗马天主教会共同定为尊崇比德的节日，^[23] 而东正教 纪念比德的节日是在5月27日。^[24] 比德，因他的圣洁，^[22] 在9世纪^[25] 以 “值得尊崇的比德”这个称号而闻名，但此称呼与罗马天主教会的封圣流程无关。据说，是天使奇迹般地提供了对他的称呼，从而完成他那未完成的墓志铭。^[26] 比德的这个称呼在第九世纪首次被使用，这种称号是公元816年和836年在亚琛召开的两次教会会议上决定的，除比德外，还有其他几位获得相同的称号。执事保罗(Paul the Deacon)在当时称赞比德，认为比他配得“可敬者”这个称号。到了第11和12世纪，这种称号已成为稀松平常。不过，也有人说，比德死后并没有用这个称号称呼他。^[27]
