小行星卫星是指环绕另一颗小行星运行的小行星。而小行星所带的卫星和其大小相近时则会用另一个术语——双小行星。
小行星卫星如何形成目前尚不清楚,有各种可能存在。较为接受的理论是从主小行星受到撞击而剥离的碎块形成,也有可能是重力大的小行星掳获较小的小行星而形成。
第一颗确认的小行星卫星是环绕艾女星(243 Ida)运行的艾卫(Dactyl)。是在1993年由伽利略号探测船所发现。
1998年在香女星周围发现第二颗小行星卫星。截至2004年2月为止,以地球上的望远镜又另外发现了37颗小行星卫星。
目前已发现的小行星卫星所环绕运行的小行星分布在小行星带、特洛伊小行星群、近地小行星群及古柏带。
休神星则是双小行星的例子,为两个相等星体环绕共同重力中心运行。
林神星和两个较小且相似的双胞胎卫星林卫一((87) Sylvia I Romulus)及林卫二((87) Sylvia II Remus)则是第一组于2005年8月10日发布确认属于三元小行星(asteroid trio)的特殊例子。
2008年,阿雷西博电波望远镜发现近地小行星2001 SN263有两颗卫星[1]。这颗小行星于2001年被发现,直径仅约2公里,被发现的两颗卫星各约1公里与300米,而且其轨道面相同,可能为数十亿年前同时生成而非捕获。过去也曾发现具有一颗卫星的近地小行星,这显示近地小行星为重星系统的几率并不低。重星系统可让天文学家精确计算出小行星的质量。
截至2022年1月,共有457颗小行星(系统)和477颗已知伴星。下表是按轨道类别列出的这些系统的总数:
