Cermaq Group AS er et sjømatselskap med virksomhet innenfor havbruk, hovedsakelig oppdrett av laks og ørret. Selskapet er et heleid datterselskap av Mitsubishi Corporation, og et av verdens største innen lakseoppdrett.[2]

Selskapet ble opprettet i desember 1994 ved at forretningsdelen i Statens kornforretning ble skilt ut til et eget foretak, da med navnet Statkorn Holding. Cermaq utvidet i tiden med norsk eierskap oppdrettsvirksomheten fra Norge til Chile og Canada.[2]
Cermaq ble opprettet i 1995 som følge av Stortingets vedtak om å oppheve kornmonopolet fra 1920-årene.[3] Stortingets vedtak ble igjen fattet på bakgrunn av den nye WTO-avtalen som trådte i kraft 1. juli 1995 og som medførte at markedsordningen for korn ble endret – avtalen krevde et skille mellom konkurransedelen og forvaltningsdelen. På bakgrunn av dette ble forretningsvirksomheten skilt ut fra forvaltningsbedriften Statens kornforretning i et eget aksjeselskap, Statkorn Holding AS. [4] Selskapet hadde ved opprettelsen til formål å «drive import, produksjon, videreforedling og omsetning av korn, kornprodukter og kraftfôr på forretningsmessig basis og i konkurranse med andre aktører i markedet».[5]
Allerede fra starten hadde Statkorn Holding en liten eierandel i et lite fiskefôrselskap som etter hvert vokste til NorAqua. Veien fra jordbruksnæringen og over til fiskenæringen startet imidlertid for alvor i september 1999 da Statkorn Holdnings daværende datterselskap Stormøllen, som produserte kraftfôr, ble solgt til Felleskjøpet, mens Statkorn Holdning kjøpte Felleskjøpets fiskefôraksjer.
Statkorn Holding var 100 % statseid fram til og med 1998, da staten solgte seg ned til 80 %. Deretter ble det i 1999 gitt klarsignal fra Stortinget om videre salg av inntil 25 % av aksjene med mål om å selge ned til 51 %.
I mars 2000 kjøpte Statkorn Holding så EWOS for 1,8 milliarder kroner. Aktivitetene i NorAqua ble slått sammen med EWOS' aktiviteter i Norge. Styret i selskapet ønsket ytterligere ekspansjon også utenfor Norge, og Statkorn Holding kjøpte så, med Stortingets godkjennelse, opp oppdrettsselskaper i Chile, Canada og Skottland.[3] Selskapet skiftet navn til Cermaq i 2001.[3] Navnet Cermaq var en forkortelse for Cereals and Marine Aquaculture (engelsk for «korn og marin akvakultur»).[6]
I november 2000 ble det åpnet for statlig nedsalg helt til 34 %, men det ble ikke gjennomført ytterligere nedsalg før i oktober 2005. da statens eierandel ble redusert fra 79,38 % til 43,54 % i forbindelse med børsnotering av selskapet. I mellomtiden ble selskapet fra 1. juli 2001 ført over fra Landbruksdepartementet til Nærings- og handelsdepartementet.[7]
I 2013 kjøpte staten seg opp igjen til en eierandel på 59,17 prosent.[4][8]
EWOS ble solgt til oppkjøpsfondene Altor og Bain Capital i juli 2013.[9] Den 20. oktober 2014 aksepterte Nærings- og fiskeridepartementet å selge statens aksjer i Cermaq til det japanske selskapet Mitsubishi Corporation.[10] Cermaq er etter dette et heleid datterselskap av Mitsubishi Corporation.
