Bessvatnet er en næringsfattig innsjø i Vågå kommune i Innlandet. Navnet kommer av elven Bessa som renner ut av innsjøen. Bunnen av innsjøen har tre groper som spor etter tre forskjellig breer som har gravd ut vannet. Den dypeste gropen på bunnen er 102 meter under overflaten.[2][4] Før istiden var det trolig en elvedal som hadde skåret seg dypt ned i det høyfjellsvidde der Bessvatnet ligger nå. Senere har isbreer erodert og slipt ned fjellet og dannet bassenget som Gjende og Bessvatnet fyller.[5]
Bessvatnet er velkjent for alle som har gått Besseggen, da en har det klare blå Bessvatnet på den ene siden av eggen og det smaragdgrønne Gjende på den andre siden. Fargeforskjellen skyldes at Bessvatnet får lite tilsig av smeltevann fra isbre, mens Gjende får store mengder bresmeltevann (blant annet fra Memurubreen) som inneholder fine leirpartikler (slam).[6] Fjellet Besshøe ligger rett ved Bessvatnet. Mot Gjende er det bare en tynn «vegg» ved Bandet/Besseggen som hindrer Bessvatnet å drenere til Gjende - istiden var over før breen hadde gnagd seg gjennom berget.[2]
