Platespilledåse (engelsk disc music box) er et mekanisk musikkinstrument bestående av en spilledåse med en rekke av tunger i ulik lengde, en overføringsmekanikk samt plater, oftest av metall, programmert med musikk. På undersiden av platene er pigger som via tannhjul i mekanikken slår an tungene. Platene drives rundt ved en fjærbelastet mekanikk, som sveives opp. Instrumentet er utviklet av den eldre sylinderspilledåsen, og oppfinnelsen tilskrives dels Oskar Paul Lochmann i Leipzig, dels Ellis Parr i London i 1885 eller 1886. Tradisjonen sier at de fant opp instrumentet samtidig, uberoende av hverandre.[1] Platespilledåsen ble et populært instrument fremfor alt i USA og Vest-Europa. Instrumentet fantes i mange ulike størrelser og med ulike mekaniske løsninger. Det ble laget spilledåser både med stående og liggende plater. Prinsippet med plater kom også i bruk for andre slags mekaniske instrumenter med spillende klokker, trommer, pianomekanikk, orgelpiper med mer. Spilledåsene ble mest brukt i hjemmene. Men de større, som ble utstyrt med myntinnkast, ble også plassert på jernbanestasjoner, hotell, cafeer og restauranter for kommersiell bruk.
Sammenliknet med sylinderspilledåse var platespilledåsene mer lydsterke. Men den store fordelen var utskiftningen av platene og musikken, noe som økte variasjonen og generelt bidro til at distribusjon av musikk ble raskere og enklere. Fra resepsjonssynspunkt kan platespilleren betraktes som en forgjenger for fonografen og grammofonen.
Ledende merke på markedet var Symphonion frem til cirka 1895. De to andre store produsentene var Polyphon og Regina. Disse tre kom sammen til å svare for cirka 90 % av alle instrument som noensinne ble laget.[2] Polyphon ble etablert i 1889 i Wahren, utenfor Leipzig, av to f.d. ansatte på Symphonion, Brachhausen og Riessner. Brachhausen flyttet i 1892 til New Jersey og startet Regina, som først kom til å importere deler fra Polyphon. Leipzig forble det største sentrum for produksjon i Europa. I 1910-årene ble de fleste produsentene av platespilledåser utkonkurrert av de mer moderne fonografene, pathefonene og grammofonene, som gjenga lydopptak. Ordet «Regina» er for øvrig for mange amerikanere det samme som platespilledåse – en såkalt generisk term. I Norge har både Symphonion og Polyphon fungert på tilsvarende måte.
Som et kuriosum kan nevnes at musikken som skulle programmeres på platen, ble tilpasset platens lengde/omriss, noe som kunne medføre at en reprise eller et vers ble lagt til for å fylle ut plassen på platen, eller omvendt.
