Ballangen (nordsamisk: Bálák, kvensk: Palanki) var en norsk kommune i landskapet Ofoten i Nordland fylke. Kommunen var oppkalt etter den 8 km lange fjorden Ballangen, og hadde administrasjonssenteret i tettstedet Ballangen. Kommunevåpenet viste en gullfeisel på grønn bunn.

Kommunen ble opprettet 1. juli 1925, ved at den ble utskilt fra Evenes. Den 1. januar 1962 ble Efjorden og Barøya i Lødingen slått sammen med Ballangen. Kommunen grenset til den tidligere Tysfjord kommune i sør, Narvik kommune i nordøst, Gällivare kommune i Sverige i sørøst og Ofotfjorden i nord.
Ballangen og den nordlige delen av Tysfjord kommune ble innlemmet i Narvik kommune 1. januar 2020. Ballangen hadde 2 470 innbyggere i 2019.
Navnet var opprinnelig navn på fjorden. Sisteleddet i navnet, -angr, betyr fjord. Førsteleddet er mer usikkert tolket, men en mulig tolkning er at det kommer fra norrønt bág 'som hindrar'.[4] Eventuelt kan man det hende at «bal» kommer av det samiske navnet Bálat, som betegner et mineralrikt sted.
Ballangen er tidligere bergverkskommunen i Ofoten. I området rundt Ballangen finner vi de første forsøkene på gruvedrift i Nord-Norge, helt tilbake til 1600-tallet. Siden den gang har det vært flere forsøk på gruvedrift med varierende suksess. I perioden 1909 til 1964 var Bjørkåsen Gruber aktive med utvinning av svovelkis. I 1988 startet Nikkel & Olivin A/S brudd på noritt for utvinning av nikkel, kobber, olivin og pukk.
Ballangen har også vært den største landbrukskommunen i Ofoten. Kommunen har svært høy andel uføretrygdede, hele 39% av befolkningen i 2017.[5]
Tettstedet Ballangen har 817 innbyggere per 1. januar 2023[6].
Sommeren 2017 ble det gjort et funn av helleristninger på Finnhågen i Valle i Efjorden i Ballangen. Funnet ble gjort 70 meter over havet. Helleristingene er kun synlige når sollyset kommer direkte inn frå siden.
Figuren viser en 4.05 meter lang båt. Bakenden på båten er forvitret, og figuren var trolig 4.43 meter lang da den ble laget. Figuren er slipt inn i berget i form av 2-3 centimeter brede linjer.
Datering av strandlinjene på stedet gjør det mulig å datere helleristningene til å være mellom 9 og 11 tusen år gamle, og dette gjør at båtfiguren er en av de eldste funnet i Norge. Båtfiguren har form som en arktisk skinnbåt; den likner på en umiak som er kjent fra inuitter på Grønland.[7]
I 1932 ble det første funnet av helleristninger gjort i kommunen. Motivene er dyr; en nise, sel og bjørn.[7]
Ballangens tusenårssted var Husvannet, som ligger i «sentrum» av Ballangen. Husvannet med sin fontene ble ansett som en kommende perle av gruppen som ble nedsatt for å finne frem til hva som skulle være kommunens tusenårssted. I arealplaner for Ballangen er området satt av som «parkanlegg» med gangstier etc. fra de framtidige byggefelter i området.
Ballangen kommune var vennskapskommune med Tosno i Leningrad oblast.
