കല്ലൻതുമ്പികളിൽപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു കുടുംബമാണ് കടുവത്തുമ്പികൾ (Gomphidae). 90 ഓളം ജനുസുകളിലായി ഏതാണ്ട് 900 സ്പീഷിസുകൾ ഈ കുടുംബത്തിലുണ്ട്. വാലിന്റെ അറ്റം ഒരുണ്ട ഒരു വടിയെ ഓർമ്മിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനാൽ ഇവയെ പൊതുവേ ക്ലബ്റ്റെയിൽസ് എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നു. പെൺതുമ്പികളിൽ ഇതത്ര വ്യത്യസ്തമായി കാണാനാവില്ല, ചില സ്പീഷിസുകളിൽ തീരെ കാണാനുമില്ല.

ചെറിയ, വേറിട്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന കൂട്ടക്കണ്ണുകൾ. മറ്റു പല വിഭാഗങ്ങളിലെ തുമ്പികൾക്ക് ഉള്ളതുപോലെ തിളങ്ങുന്ന ലോഹനിറങ്ങൾ ഇവയ്ക്ക് ഇല്ല.[1] പ്രായപൂർത്തിയായവയ്ക്ക് 40 മുതൽ 70 വരെ മില്ലീമീറ്റർ നീളമുണ്ടാവും.
ചെറുദൂരങ്ങളിൽ വൻവേഗതയോടെ പറക്കുന്നവയാണ് ഇവ. പറക്കുന്ന പ്രാണികളെ പിടിക്കാനായി വിശ്രമിച്ചുകാത്തിരിക്കുകയാണ് ചെയ്യാറ്. നിലത്തുവിശ്രമിക്കുകയോ വയർ തൂക്കിയിട്ട് ഇലകളിൽ ഇരിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യും, വലിയ സ്പീഷിസുകൾ വയർ തൂക്കിയിട്ട് കിടക്കുകയോ ഇലകളിൽ വിശ്രമിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യും.[1]
മിക്ക കടുവത്തുമ്പികളും അരുവികളിലും നദികളിലും തടാകങ്ങളിലുമാണ് ഇരതേടുന്നത്.[2]
