3 എന്ന രാസ സൂത്രവാക്യമുള്ള ഒരു രാസ സംയുക്തമാണ് പൊട്ടാസ്യം നൈട്രേറ്റ്. പൊട്ടാസ്യം അയോണുകളുടേയും (K+), നൈട്രേറ്റ് അയോണുകളുടേയും (NO3-) അയോണിക് ലവണമാണിത്. അതിനാൽ ഒരു ക്ഷാര ലോഹ നൈട്രേറ്റ് ആണ് . പ്രകൃതിയിൽ ഇത് നൈറ്റർ ആയി കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇത് നൈട്രജന്റെ ഉറവിടമാണ്. നൈട്രജന് നൈറ്ററിൽ നിന്നാണ് ആ പേര് ലഭിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. പൊട്ടാസ്യം നൈട്രേറ്റ് പൊതുവേ സാൾട്ട്പീറ്റർ (saltpeter or saltpetre) എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെടാറുണ്ട്.
