ഫോസ്ജീൻ COCl2 എന്ന രാസസൂത്രമുള്ള ഒരു രാസസംയുക്തം ആകുന്നു. ഒന്നാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധത്തിൽ രാസായുധങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള മരണങ്ങളിൽ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ, അതായത് 100,000 മരണങ്ങളിൽ 85% മരണങ്ങൾക്കും കാരണം ഈ രാസവസ്തുവായിരുന്നു. ഇത് വ്യാവസായികമായി വളരെ പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ള ഒരു രാസസംയുക്തമാണ്. ഔഷധങ്ങളുടെ നിർമ്മാണത്തിലും കാർബണികസംയുക്തങ്ങളുടെ ഉല്പാദനത്തിലും ഇത് പ്രധാന നിർമ്മാണഘടകമാണ്. നേർപ്പിച്ച അവസ്ഥയിൽ ഇതിനു പുതുതായി മുറിച്ച വൈക്കോലിന്റെയോ പുല്ലിന്റെയോ മണമായിരിക്കും[5]. സ്വാഭാവികമായി ഈ വാതകം ശീതീകരണികളിൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ഓർഗാനോക്ലോറിൻ സംയുക്തങ്ങളുടെ ദഹനം മൂലം ചെറിയതോതിൽ ഉണ്ടാകുന്നുണ്ട്[6]. ഫോസ് (അർത്ഥം: പ്രകാശം), ജെനസിസ് (അർത്ഥം: ജനനം) എന്നീ രണ്ടു ഗ്രീക്ക് വാക്കുകളിൽനിന്നും ഉണ്ടായതാണ്.
