Aknīste (vietējā izloksnē — Aknīša)[3] ir pilsēta Latvijā, Jēkabpils novadā. Atrodas Dienvidsusējas krastos, 135 km no Rīgas, 69 km no Daugavpils, 53 km no Jēkabpils.

Domājams, ka mūsdienu Aknīstes apkārtne atradusies sēļu Kalves novadā. Ciema teritorijā atrodas Aknīstes (Susējas) pilskalns, nedaudz uz ziemeļiem — Radžupes pilskalns. Pilnvērtīgi izrakumi tajos nav veikti.[3]
Vēstures avotos pirmoreiz minēta 1298. gadā. Lietuvas krusta karu laikā.[4] 1255. gadā Mindaugs, bet 1388. gadā Lietuvas dižkungs Vītauts Sēlijas dienvidu daļas zemes atdeva Livonijas ordenim, to pārvaldīja Daugavpils komturi. Livonijas—Lietuvas robeža nostabilizējās tikai 15. gadsimtā.
Vēl pirms Viļņas ūnijas noslēgšanas 1560. gadā Polijas-Lietuvas valdnieks Sigismunds II Augusts Aknīstes apkārtni uzdāvāja Lietuvas kņazam Jānim Krošinskim (lietuviešu: Krošinskis, poļu: Kroszinski).[5] Kad Otrā Ziemeļu kara laikā Krievijas caristes karaspēka uzbrukuma dēļ zviedri 1656. gadā uz ilgāku laiku nobloķēja satiksmi pa Daugavas ūdensceļu, krasi pieauga kravu apgrozījums caur hercogistes teritoriju no Jēkabpils līdz Jaunjelgavai. Pēc kara beigām un Daugavas tirdzniecības atjaunošanās 1667. — 1668. gadā hercogs Jēkabs netālu no Aknīstes lika no Vilkupes rakt Eglonas-Susējas kanālu, lai savienotu Dienvidsusēju ar Daugavas pieteku Eglonu.
Nav precīzi zināms, kad Aknīste pārgājusi Viļņas vaivadijas pakļautībā, bet zināms, ka 1715. gadā to savā īpašumā ieguva Rokišķu grāfu Tīzenhauzenu dzimta (poļu: Tyzenhauz). Dažādi autori par pārejas laiku nosauc 18. gadsimtu un saista to ar grāfa Tīzenhauzena ķildu ar Kurzemes un Zemgales hercogu, citi 1783. gada konvenciju starp Kurzemes hercogisti un Krievijas impēriju par Slokas apgabala atdošanu. Zināms tikai, ka ap 1768. gadu sastādītā Saukas mežziņa Elkšņu muižas robežu aprakstā Aknīste minēta kā Lietuvas pusē esoša.[3]
1795. gadā pēc Trešās Polijas dalīšanas Aknīsti iekļāva Krievijas impērijas Kauņas guberņas sastāvā. Tā rezultātā dzimtbūšanu pagastā, atšķirībā no pārējās Sēlijas, atcēla tikai 1861. gadā. Tas radīja ekonomisku un izglītības atpalicību, kuru nācās ilgi pārvarēt.[3] Latvija Aknīsti no Lietuvas atguva 1921. gadā pēc Latvijas-Lietuvas robežkomisijas lēmuma, kas atzina teritorijas piederību Latvijai, jo lielākā daļa tās iedzīvotāju bija latvieši. 1925. gadā tai piešķīra biezi apdzīvotas vietas (ciema) statusu. 1929. gadu beigās ciemā bija 56 mājas.
No 1950. gada pilsētciemats un līdz 1956. gadam Aknīstes rajona centrs, 1991. gadā Aknīste ieguva pilsētas tiesības.[4] 2009.-2021. gadā bija Aknīstes novada centrs.
Aknīste piedzīvojusi vairākus iebraucēju viļņus: 19. gadsimta sākumā brīvlaistie latvieši no Kurzemes, gadsimta vidū ebreji, bet ap 1860. vēl viens latviešu vilnis no netālo Biržu apkaimes. 20. gadsimta 20. gados jaunu migrācijas pieplūdumu izsauca zemes reforma, bet padomju varas gados ieceļoja slāvu tautas.
Aknīstē no 19. gadsimta vidus dzīvoja liela ebreju kopiena — 1920. gadā tie bija 194 cilvēki jeb 75% iedzīvotāju, bet 1935. gadā — 199 jeb 42%. Viņu rokās bija gandrīz visa miesta tirdzniecība, daudzi bija amatnieki.[3] Nacistiskās Vācijas okupācijas sākumposmā, sākoties holokaustam, 1941. gada 18. jūlijā lielāko daļu pilsētas ebreju nošāva Ilūkstes un kaimiņu pagastu pašaizsardzības vienības dalībnieki, neraugoties uz vācu ieceltā miesta komandanta Jāņa Valdmaņa protestiem.[3] Padomju okupācijas laikā 1950. gados upurus pārapbedīja pie Aknīstes kapsētas. 2020. gada oktobrī nošaušanas vietā atklāts piemiņas akmens.[6][7]
Aknīstes un tās apkārtnes sīkpauguraino reljefu veido Aknīstes pacēlums, pa kuru šeit tek Dienvidsusēja un tās pietekas Radžupe un Elsīte. Dienvidsusējas senlejas krastu augstums sasniedz 25 m virs upes līmeņa, pašas upes platums ap 10 m, dziļums ap 1 m.[4] Augšpus pilsētas arī Radžupei ir kanjonveida ieleja.
No Aknīstes ved autoceļi P74 (Aknīste-Siliņi, faktiski Jēkabpils-Aknīste-Lietuva), P73 (Vecumnieki-Nereta-Subate), vietējie ceļi V771 uz Mežalaukiem un V709 uz Gārseni-Ausmām.
Aknīstes pilsētas ielu kopējais garums 2014. gadā bija 18,703 km.[8]
1916. gadā vācu karaspēks uzbūvēja šaursliežu dzelzceļa līniju no Rokišķiem līdz Jēkabpils pievārtei caur Aknīsti. Līdz 1960. gadu sākumam pa to kursēja pasažieru vilcieni (Aknīste-Siliņi, ar tālāku pārsēšanos), 1964. gadā līniju oficiāli slēdza.
Aknīstes novadā 2009. gadā darbojās četras izglītības iestādes — Aknīstes vidusskola, Gārsenes pamatskola, Asares pamatskola un Pirmsskolas izglītības iestāde bērnudārzs "Bitīte". Aknīstes vidusskolā 2009./2010. mācību gadā mācījās 237 skolēni. Aknīstes pagasta skola dibināta 1869. gadā. Bez bībeles pamatiem un garīgām dziesmām mācīja rakstīšanu un aritmētiku.
1877./78. m.g. skolā mācījās 28 skolēni, 1885./86. m.g. skolā mācījās 60 zēnu un 2 meitenes
Pēc 1. pasaules kara 1919. gadā skolu atjaunoja ar 3 klasēm. Visus priekšmetus mācīja latviešu valodā viens skolotājs — Jānis Valdmanis. Pēc 1934. gada apvērsuma Valdmanis kā pārlieku kreiss tika atlaists. No 1938./39. m.g. mācības notika jaunajā skolā — tagadējās skolas telpās. 2. pasaules kara laikā skolas telpas tika izmantotas par kara hospitāli. 1944. g. 1. septembrī mācības skolā atsākās.
Pirmā avīze Aknīstē sāka iznākt 1950. gadā līdz ar Aknīstes rajona izveidi un beidza iznākt 1956. gadā līdz ar tā likvidāciju. Tikai 1995. gadā pilsētai atkal parādījās sava periodika — ikmēneša izdevums "Mana Aknīste".
No 1963. — 1970. gadam par skolas direktoru strādāja Roberts Aišpurs. Šajā laikā tika sākta arī jaunās skolas piebūve. Ekspluatācijā nodota 1968. gadā. 1971. gada janvārī tika atklāta tagadējā sporta zāle. No 1970. — 1995.g. par Aknīstes vidusskolas direktoru strādāja Oļģerts Žindigs. 1987. gadā skolā atklāja novadpētniecības muzeju, kurš 1998. gadā kluva par Aknīstes novadpētniecības muzeju atsevišķā ēkā.[3]
