Hippocampus (a Graeco ἱππόκαμπος < ἵππος 'equus' + κάμπος 'monstrum'[1]), vulgo equus marinus appellatus, in mythologia Phoenica[2] et Graeca est bestia opinabilis (sed eius nomen proprium solum Graecum est). Etiam in mythologiam Etruscam introducta est. Hippocampus plerumque corpore superiore equi et inferiore piscis depingitur.
