San Xoán de Ourantes é unha parroquia pertencente ao concello de Punxín, na comarca do Carballiño. En 2013, segundo o IGE, tiña 113 habitantes (57 homes e 56 mulleres), distribuídos en 6 entidades de poboación, o que supón unha diminución en relación ao ano 1999 cando tiña 142 habitantes.

O topónimo Ourantes é un hidrónimo de orixe prerromana, da raíz *awer- co significado de 'mollar, humedecer, fluír'. Outros autores defende que é un orónimo a partir da raíz preindoeuropea *or-r/ur-r "outeiro, algura, monte ou val entre montes".[2]
O castro de San Cibrao de Las é un poboado castrexo de grandes dimensións, coñecido como A Cidade. Estivo habitado desde o século II a.C. ata o século II d.C., e con posibles ocupacións esporádicas máis tardías.
A igrexa de San Xoán de Ourantes é un templo de orixe románica, moi modificado no século XVIII, principalmente no seu muro norte onde se lle adosou unha esvelta torre campanil barroca.
