Luneburgo ou Lüneburg, tamén transcrito Lueneburg (en alemán: Lüneburg [ˈlyːnəbʊɐ̯k]) é unha cidade situada na Baixa Saxonia, Alemaña. É a capital do distrito homónimo (en alemán: Hansestadt Lüneburg [ˈhanzəʃtat ˈlyːnəbʊɐ̯k] ). A primeira mención que se ten dela data de 956.

A escola de San Miguel, antigo mosteiro beneditino, albergou unha Academia de Cabaleiros mentres nas principais igrexas (San Miguel, San Nicolás e San Xoán) tocaban organistas do talle de Georg Böhm (1661-1773).[2]
Lüneburg atópase na conca baixa do río Ilmenau, 30 km antes de chegar á súa confluencia co río Elba. Ao sur da cidade esténdense os 7400 km² do uzal de Luneburgo, o cal se desenvolveu grazas á explotación forestal e as minas de sal. A constante extracción dos depósitos de sal existentes baixo a cidade tamén deu lugar ao afundimento de varias zonas, algunhas veces de forma gradual, outras de maneira espectacular. No extremo oeste de Luneburgo áchase a coñecida como Kalkberg, un pequeno outeiro e canteira de xeso, onde existiu un castelo que foi a orixe da cidade.
Durante a Idade Media, Lüneburg gozou de gran riqueza grazas ao comercio do sal. Por todos os arredores existían moitas fábricas que o exportaban ás vilas circundantes. Seguindo a Vella Ruta do Sal era transportada vía Lauenburg até Lübeck, onde se embarcaba para ser distribuída por toda a costa do mar Báltico. Lüneburg e o seu sal foron unha das principais fontes de poder e riqueza da liga Hanseática, étapa á que se adicou o Museo do Sal de Alemaña na cidade.[3]
Lüneburg foi erixida en ducado en 1235, posteriormente anexionada a Hannover en 1692.
Durante a ocupación napoleónica, e de 1807 a 1810, a cidade foi anexionada ao reino de Westfalia, antes de ser incorporada a Francia até 1814, data do retorno ao reino de Hannover tras o afundimento do Primeiro Imperio.
Após un longo período de prosperidade, a súa importancia empezou a declinar lentamente a partir de 1600. As salinas pecháronse en 1980. A cidade volveu recuperar unha nova notoriedade grazas á fundación da súa universidade en 1989.
A paisaxe única das Landas de Luneburgo[4] (Lüneburger Heide, termo que non ten relación coa palabra alemá Land, Länder en plural) débese ao escalonamento das areas producido polo retroceso do glaciar após o último período glacial. A deforestación da rexión circundante por mor da produción do sal, completou a acción natural, que terminou empobrecendo a paisaxe natural.
Na segunda guerra mundial, destruíuse o 2,4% da cidade. O 4 de maio de 1945 asinouse a Convención de Lüneburg, por medio da cal as tropas alemás estacionadas en Westfalia, Dinamarca e os Países Baixos quedaban ás ordes do mariscal de campo Montgomery, o que preludiaba a capitulación do 8 de maio de 1945. O 23 de maio de 1945, o criminal de guerra nazi Heinrich Himmler, suicidouse en Lüneburg, despois de ser capturado polo exército británico, inxerindo unha cápsula de cianuro antes de que o seu interrogatorio comezase. O seu corpo está enterrado nun bosque próximo nun lugar sen marcar.
En tempos recentes, Luneburgo ten ampla actividade turística e hostaleira, coa maior de bares por habitante de Alemaña.
A cidade ten unha grande fama e é o escenario, de forma legal, de street Art (muralismo) e grafittis, ás veces promovidos pola universidade.[5]
O distrito máis poboado (8000 habitantes) é Kaltenmoor, que se caracteriza por unha alta porcentaxe de inmigrantes.

A cidade é sede da Universidade Leuphana de Lüneburg (anteriormente coñecida como a Universität Lüneburg). Hai 14 escolas secundarias na cidade: 5 Gymnasien, 4 Realschulen e 5 Hauptschulen. Conta con 6 escolas de Formación Profesional, 3 escolas especiais, 3 escolas privadas e 12 escolas primarias.
Lüneburg é unha das poucas cidades do norte de Alemaña cuxo centro histórico quedou indemne despois da Segunda guerra mundial, polo que o seu centro histórico non sufriu a destrución que si ocorreu noutras cidades. Con todo, o abandono dos edificios até a década de 1960 levou a desaparición dalgúns predios notables. Ademais durante as décadas de 1950 e 1960 algúns dos edificios semi-ruinosos foron demolidos para construír neles almacéns, seguindo a arquitectura industrial da época, como consecuencia desas demolicións e construcións posteriores, tamén se produciu a desaparición dalgunhas rúas de Lüneburg.
Desde comezos dos anos 1970 a cidade está a ser coidadosamente restaurada. Iso levou a descubrimentos de antigas pinturas até ocultas en teitos, cerámicas medievais e tabernas históricas, pozos etc., o que supuxo unha axuda notable no coñecemento da vida nesa zona durante a Idade Media.
Dentro do conxunto monumental sobresaen as igrexas de San Esteban, San Xoán, San Miguel e San Nicolás. Todas elas construídas durante os séculos XIV e XV en fábrica de ladrillo, como é habitual no norte do país. Son igrexas na súa maioría de culto luterano, pero a igrexa de San Esteban é a máis antiga con culto ecuménico —funciona como igrexa tanto para protestantes como para católicos—.
Tamén interesantes son o antigo arsenal, a farmacia de 1598, a Bäckerstrasse e o concello cos seus característicos soportais. Fronte a este sitúase unha estatua de bronce da deusa da Lúa con arco e frecha. O orixinal que data de 1530 foi roubado nos anos 70 e agora pode observarse unha réplica feita en 1972.
É moi notable, até o grao de haberse convertido no ex libris da cidade, a zona do antigo porto no río Ilmenau, cun guindastre medieval que segue en funcionamento.
Moi próximo á cidade atópase o mosteiro de Lünen, un antigo mosteiro beneditino, que data de 1172.
O fútbol é o deporte máis popular en Luneburgo, do mesmo xeito que o é en toda Alemaña; o hockey sobre xeo e baloncesto tamén son moi populares.
