En gramática, o infinitivo é unha forma verbal non finita que mostra as características dun substantivo e carece dalgúns trazos típicos dun verbo (como a expresión de categorías, por exemplo: a persoa, o estado de ánimo, etc.).[1] Por convención lexicográfica, o infinitivo é en moitas linguas a forma empregada para enunciar un verbo e, polo tanto, a que aparece como entrada de dicionario ou lema.
Porén, o infinitivo non sempre ten todas estas características nunha lingua determinada. Hai linguas sen infinitivo estrito, como o grego moderno, que usan varias estratexias para colocar un verbo nunha cláusula nominal.
O infinitivo en galego pode terminar en -ar , -er , -ir ou -or (con esa terminación só se conserva o verbo por, sinónimo de poñer), coas correspondentes conxugacións.
Na lingua galega e portuguesa, alén do infinitivo non flexionado ou infinitivo impersoal, tamén existe o infinitivo flexionado por persoa, chamado infinitivo persoal, conxugado ou flexionado.[2] Anteriormente tamén se usaba na lingua asturleonesa e na lingua napolitana e aínda é usado na lingua húngara.[3]
O nome "infinitivo" provén do adxectivo latino înfīnītīvus que significa "sen límite" e ás veces foi considerado un dos "modos" da gramática latina (entendendo "modo" non no sentido actual de modo, senón como un termo xenérico para indicar un forma gramatical). Polo tanto, înfīnītīvus era a forma abreviada de referirse a "modus înfīnītīvus". O nome responde a que o infinitivo non está limitado (e polo tanto está "sen límite") por varias categorías gramaticais de verbos en forma persoal (en latín o infinitivo non expresa modo, persoa ou número). O termo latino "īnfīnītīvus" foi unha tradución do termo gramatical grego ἀπαρέμφατος (scil. κλίσις) (= "aparémfatos" [scil. "clisis"] é dicir, "non indica nada ademais"), pois, ao carecer doutras marcas morfolóxicas, o infinitivo só indica o contido semántico do verbo.[4]
