Hirakata on ollut historiansa aikana liikenteellisesti merkittävä paikkakunta Kioton ja Osakan toisiinsa liittävän Yodojoen puolivälissä. Sengoku-kaudella se kehittyi temppelikaupunkina (jinaichō) ja myöhemmin Edo-kaudella kaupunkien välille rakennetun Kyōkaidō-tien eli Tōkaidōn Kioton ja Osakan välinen osuuden postiasemana (shukuba). Yksi aikakauden majataloista, Kagiya, on restauroitu museoksi.[6] Kaupungin nähtävyyksiin kuuluu myös Hirakata Park -huvipuisto, jossa on muun muassa lähes 700 metrin pituinen puinen vuoristorata.[7]
Hirakataa palvelevat JR Nishi-Nihonin Katamachi-linja (Gakkentoshi-linja) sekä Keihan-rautateiden Keihan-päälinja ja Katano-linja.[8]
