Emmanuel Lévinas (myös Levinas; alk. Emmanuelis Levinas; 12. tammikuuta 1906 (J: 30. joulukuuta 1905) Kaunas, Venäjän keisarikunta – 25. joulukuuta 1995 Pariisi, Ranska) oli liettualaissyntyinen ranskalainen filosofi. Hän kehitti oman fenomenologisen näkemyksensä, joka jatkaa Edmund Husserlin ja Martin Heideggerin fenomenologiaa ja liittyy samalla juutalaiseen perinteeseen. Erityisen tunnettuja ovat Lévinasin kuvaus etiikasta ja siihen liittyvä toiseuden ja kasvojen käsitys.
Emmanuel Levinas syntyi 12. tammikuuta 1906 juutalaiseen perheeseen Kaunasissa, Kaunasin kuvernementissa, nykyisen Liettuan alueella. 1920-luvulla hän ryhtyi opiskelemaan filosofiaa Strasbourgin yliopistossa, Ranskassa.[1]
Vuonna 1930 Lévinas sai Ranskan kansalaisuuden. Toisen maailmansodan aikana hän toimi Ranskan armeijassa saksan ja venäjän kielen tulkkina. Vuonna 1940 hän joutui saksalaisten vangiksi, mutta vältti tuhoamisleirin sotavankistatuksensa ansiosta. Sen sijaan Lévinasin kaikki muut sukulaiset, vaimoa ja tytärtä lukuun ottamatta, surmattiin. Sodan jälkeen Lévinasista tuli Pariisissa toimivan juutalaisen opettajankoulutuslaitoksen johtaja.[2]
Vuonna 1963, 57-vuotiaana, Lévinas sai professuurin Poitiers'n yliopistosta. Vuonna 1967 hän siirtyi Nanterren yliopistoon ja vuonna 1973 Sorbonneen. Lévinas jäi eläkkeelle vuonna 1976.[3] Levinas on siinä mielessä poikkeuksellinen filosofi, että hän kirjoitti merkittävimmät työnsä yliopistomaailman ulkopuolella ja sai akateemista mainetta vasta lähellä eläkeikää.
Lévinasin filosofiset vaikutteet ovat laaja-alaisia ja omaperäisiä. Juutalaisen perinnön ja Raamatun lisäksi siihen ovat vaikuttaneet venäläiset klassiset kirjailijat, kuten Aleksandr Puškin ja Nikolai Gogol sekä erityisesti Husserlin ja Heideggerin fenomenologia.[4]
Lévinasin suhtautuminen Heideggeriin on kahtiajakoinen. Toisaaltä hänen mielestään
»Jokaisen, joka 1900-luvulla ryhtyy harjoittamaan filosofiaa, täytyy kulkea Heideggerin filosofian läpi - vaikka sitten vain jättääkseen sen.[5]»
Toisaalta Heidegger ei ole koskaan Lévinasin silmissä saanut anteeksi osallisuuttaan kansallissosialismiin.[6]
Lévinasin filosofian ydin ja ensimmäinen filosofia, se mistä kaikki lähtee liikkeelle, on etiikka, ei metafysiikka, kuten aristotelisessa perinteessä on esitetty. Tämä ei kuitenkaan tarkoita etiikkaa tavanomaisessa merkityksessä, jossa pyritään oikeuttamaan tietyt teot.[7] Filosofian historiaa on Lévinasin mukaan hallinnut pyrkimys totaliteettiin ja hallintaan, jossa tietty "samuus" hallitsee kaikkea jättämättä ulkopuolelle mitään. Tämän murtamiseksi on löydettävä tapa tarkastella suhdetta toiseen tavalla, jossa toinen säilyttää toiseutensa.[8] Peruskysymys on, miten minun olemassaoloni oikeuttaa itsensä ja asemansa toisiin nähden.[9] Vastaus tähän saavutetaan toteamalla toiseuden yhteismitattomuus itseen nähden.[10]
Toiseuden lisäksi keskeinen teema Lévinasin etiikassa on kasvojen merkitys. Kasvot edustavat ihmisessä riisutuinta itseä, haavoittuvuutta ja kontrollin puutetta, toisin kuin arvoasemamme, tapamme pukeutua tai se mitä passiin on kirjoitettu.[11] Katsoessamme toisen ihmisen kasvoja olemme välittömästi vastuussa hänestä, koska se on luonnollinen tapa tunnistaa toiseus itseoikeutettuna, ei ainoastaan oman totaliteettimme ja hallintamme välineenä.[12] Vastuu menee jopa niin pitkälle, että Lévinas allekirjoittaa täysin Fjodor Dostojevskin Karamazovin veljesten lausuman:
»Jokainen meistä on syyllinen kaikkien edessä, kaikkien puolesta ja kaiken puolesta ja minä enemmän kuin kukaan muu.»
Näin ei ole siksi, että jokin asia olisi suoranaisesti minun syytäni, vaan koska omalla "samuudellani" on automaattisesti toisten kasvoja katsoessa totaalista vastuuta kaikista ja kaikesta. Minällä on aina enemmän vastuuta kuin toisella — tässä on Lévinasin etiikan ydin.[13]
