Mendikatea jatorri bolkanikoko arrokez osatuta dago.[1] Lebombo toponimoa zuluerazko Ubombo hitzetik dator, "sudur handi" esan nahi duena. Kruger Parke Nazionalak mendikatearen zati bat babesten du.
37.000 urteko giza fosilen aztarnategiak daude inguru horretan. Han aurkitu dituzte erabilera matematikoa dituzten lehen objektu ezagunak; besteak beste, Lebombo hezurra, 29 koska dituen mandril baten peronezko pieza txiki bat, gaur egun oraindik Namibiako san klan batzuek erabiltzen dituzten egutegi-makilak gogorarazten duena.
