Linnas on gümnaasium, raamatukogu ja postkontor. Vaatamisväärsusteks on sealse mõis hoonetekompleks, koduloomuuseum, aastal 1817 ehitatud katoliiklik Püha Jüri kirik. Linnas on üks vähestest säilinud puidust sünagoogidest, mis valmis aastal 1925.
Ludwik Zamenhof lõi esperanto töötades Veisiejais silmaarstina. Linnas töötas ka helilooja Juozas Neimontas. Seal sündisid Leedu rahandustegelane Eduardas Vilkelis, poliitik Juozas Krikštolaitis ja majandustegelane Rokas Flikas.
Aastal 1253 mainiti ristisõdijate kroonikas jatvingite maal asuvat paika nimega Weyze (Veise).
Veisiejai mõisa on esimest korda mainitud 1501. aastal. 1525 sai asula alevi õigused, järgmisel aastal ehitati sinna esimene kirik. Esimesed juudid asusid sinna elama XVIII sajandi alguses, aastal 1748 ehitati sinna esimene sünagoog. Aastaks 1854 olid suurem osa alevi elanikest juudid. Alev oli pikka aega Massalskite suguvõsa valduses, nemad rahastasid ka sealse kiriku rajamist.
1956 sai linnaõigused.
