Quotes of the day from previous years:
Aggression unopposed becomes a contagious disease. |
~ Jimmy Carter ~ |
Jefferson refused to pin his hopes on the occasional success of honest and unambitious men; on the contrary, the great danger was that philosophers would be lulled into complacence by the accidental rise of a Franklin or a Washington. Any government which made the welfare of men depend on the character of their governors was an illusion. |
~ Daniel J. Boorstin ~ |
We live in a time of transition, an uneasy era which is likely to endure for the rest of this century. During the period we may be tempted to abandon some of the time-honored principles and commitments which have been proven during the difficult times of past generations. We must never yield to this temptation. Our American values are not luxuries, but necessities — not the salt in our bread, but the bread itself. |
~ Jimmy Carter ~ |
I believe that anyone can be successful in life, regardless of natural talent or the environment within which we live. This is not based on measuring success by human competitiveness for wealth, possessions, influence, and fame, but adhering to God's standards of truth, justice, humility, service, compassion, forgiveness, and love. |
~ Jimmy Carter ~ |
Life is Supercalifragilisticexpialidocius. |
~ Julie Andrews ~ |
Virtue is not a mushroom, that springeth up of itself in one night when we are asleep, or regard it not; but a delicate plant, that groweth slowly and tenderly, needing much pains to cultivate it, much care to guard it, much time to mature it, in our untoward soil, in this world's unkindly weather. |
~ Isaac Barrow ~ |
Ultimately, the basic issue is whether America will provide global leadership that springs from the unity and the integrity of the American people, or whether extremist doctrines, the manipulation of the truth, will define America's role in the world. At stake is nothing less than our nation's soul. … But I am not discouraged. I really am not. I do not despair for our country. I never do. I believe, as I always have, the essential decency and compassion and common sense of the American people will prevail. |
~ Jimmy Carter ~ |
Refusal to believe until proof is given is a rational position; denial of all outside of our own limited experience is absurd. |
~ Annie Besant ~ |
I still have complete confidence that the United States, if given time, will resolve its problems. We have always been able to do that in the past, whenever we faced difficult questions. The United States still has that innate strength. |
~ Jimmy Carter ~ |
We suffer primarily not from our vices or our weaknesses, but from our illusions. We are haunted, not by reality, but by those images we have put in their place. |
~ Daniel J. Boorstin ~ |
Ukraine will continue to defend itself and will win in this war waged against us. Because we are on our land. The truth is on our side. And the whole civilized world is with us. We are fighting for what is true for any people on the planet — for life and freedom, for the right to happiness for all our families, for all our children. Russia was left alone. It is already isolated and will be condemned for this war. |
~ Volodymyr Zelenskyy ~ |
There is a remarkable trend toward fundamentalism in all religions — including the different denominations of Christianity as well as Hinduism, Judaism, and Islam. Increasingly, true believers are inclined to begin a process of deciding: "Since I am aligned with God, I am superior and my beliefs should prevail, and anyone who disagrees with me is inherently wrong," and the next step is "inherently inferior." The ultimate step is "subhuman," and then their lives are not significant. That tendency has created, throughout the world, intense religious conflicts. Those Christians who resist the inclination toward fundamentalism and who truly follow the nature, actions, and words of Jesus Christ should encompass people who are different from us with our care, generosity, forgiveness, compassion, and unselfish love. It is not easy to do this. It is a natural human inclination to encapsulate ourselves in a superior fashion with people who are just like us — and to assume that we are fulfilling the mandate of our lives if we just confine our love to our own family or to people who are similar and compatible. Breaking through this barrier and reaching out to others is what personifies a Christian and what emulates the perfect example that Christ set for us. |

We strive to form a single national front against the Judeo-Masonic lodges, against Moscow and the Marxist societies. ~ Francisco Franco (attained office October 1, 1938)
While the easiest way in metaphysics is to condemn all metaphysics as nonsense, the easiest way in morals is to elevate the common practice of the community into a moral absolute. ~ Daniel J. Boorstin
Since the Creator had made the facts of the after-life inaccessible to man, He must not have required that man understand death in order to live fruitfully. ~ Daniel J. Boorstin
A book is the only immortality. ~ Rufus Choate
They were afraid of dying but even more afraid to show it. ~ Tim O'Brien
They carried the soldier's greatest fear, which was the fear of blushing. Men killed, and died, because they were embarrassed not to. ~ Tim O'Brien
We should live our lives as though Christ were coming this afternoon. ~ Jimmy Carter
A Contemplation of What Has Been Created, and Why
I tried to fathom nature's laws
From twirling models and schoolroom sketches
Of molecules and parts of atoms,
And nearly believed — but then came quarks,
Bosons, leptons, antiparticles,
Opposite turning mirror images,
Some that perforate the earth,
Never swerving from their certain paths.
I've listened to conflicting views
About the grand and lesser worlds:
A big bang where it all began;
Of curved, ever-expanding space;
Perhaps tremendous whirling yo-yos
That will someday reach the end
Of cosmic gravity and then
Fly back to where they can restart
Or cataclysmically blow apart —
And then, and then the next event.
And is that all an accident?
~ Jimmy Carter
I never felt that my dedication to military service was a violation of my faith in Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. ~ Jimmy Carter
For me personally and for most other Americans, this commitment to peace and diplomacy does not imply a blind or total pacifism. There are times when war is justified, and for many centuries the moral criteria for violence have been carefully delineated. ~ Jimmy Carter
When combined, the small individual contributors of caring, friendship, forgiveness, and love, each of us different from our next-door neighbors, can form a phalanx, an army, with great capability. ~ Jimmy Carter
We have the heaviest concentration of lawyers on Earth — one for every five-hundred Americans … We have more litigation, but I am not sure that we have more justice. No resources of talent and training in our own society, even including the medical care, is more wastefully or unfairly distributed than legal skills. Ninety percent of our lawyers serve 10 percent of our people. We are over-lawyered and under-represented. ~ Jimmy Carter
While the Jeffersonian did not flatly deny the Creator's power to perform miracles, he admired His refusal to do so. ~ Daniel J. Boorstin
Hopefully, I brought people a certain joy. That will be a wonderful legacy. |
~ Julie Andrews ~ |
Success is terrifying. Like happiness, it is often appreciated in retrospect. It's only later that you place it in perspective. Years from now, I'll look back and say, "God, wasn't it wonderful?" |
~ Julie Andrews ~ |
Liberty is a great celestial Goddess, strong, beneficent, and austere, and she can never descend upon a nation by the shouting of crowds, nor by arguments of unbridled passion, nor by the hatred of class against class. |
~ Annie Besant ~ |
