The Cybermen are a fictional race of cyborgs who are amongst the most persistent enemies of the Doctor in the British science fiction television series, Doctor Who. Cybermen were originally a wholly organic species of humanoids originating on Earth's twin planet Mondas that began to implant more and more artificial parts into their bodies as a means of self-preservation. This led to the race becoming coldly logical and calculating, with every emotion all but deleted from their minds. The Cybermen also have a rivalry with the Daleks.
Common Phrases
The Cyber Leader: Excellent.
The Cyber Leader: Destroy them
Cyberman: Delete! [The battle cry of the 2006 cybermen, similar to "Exterminate!" as in the Daleks.]
Cybermen: You will be upgraded.
Cyberman: You will become like us. [Numerous times throughout the series]
Cyberman: Upgrading is compulsory. [Numerous times throughout the series]
Polly: But we cannot live with you, you're different! You have no feelings!
Cyberman: Feelings? I do not understand that word.
The Doctor: Emotions! Love! Pride! Hate! Fear! Have you no emotions, sir, hmm?
Cyberman: Come to Mondas and you will have no need of emotions. You will become like us.
Polly: Like you?
Cyberman: We have freedom from disease, protection against heat and cold, true mastery. Do you prefer to die, in misery?
Polly: But look, surely I...it's possible for us not to lose Earth's energy?
Cyberman: It is inevitable.
Polly: Then you don't mind if we all die.
Cyberman: Why should we mind?
Doctor:[outraged] Why? WHY?
Polly: Because millions and millions of people are going to suffer and die horribly!
Cyberman: We shall not be affected.
Polly: Don't you think of anything except yourselves?
Cyberman: We are equipped to survive. We are only interested in survival. Anything else is of no importance. Your deaths will not affect us.
Polly: But I can't make you understand, you're condemning us all to die! Have you no heart?
Cyberman: No. That is one of the weaknesses that we have removed.
Polly: Don't you care?!
Cyberman: Care? No, why should I care?
Polly: Because they're people and they're going to die!
Cyberman: I do not understand you. There are people dying all over your world, yet you do not care about them.
Cyberman: Anyone who moves will be killed instantly.
Barclay: Who, or what are you?
Cyberman: We are called Cybermen.
Barclay: Cybermen?
Cyberman: Yes, Cybermen. We were exactly like you once, but our cybernetic scientists realised that our race was getting weak.
Barclay: Weak? How?
Cyberman: Our lifespan was getting shorter, so our scientists and doctors devised spare parts for our bodies until we could be almost completely replaced.
Polly: But that means you're not like us! You're robots!
Cyberman: Our brains are just like yours, except that certain weaknesses have been removed.
Barclay: Weaknesses? What weaknesses?
Cyberman: You call them emotions, do you not?
Polly: But, that's terrible! You mean you wouldn't care about someone in pain?!
Cyberman: There would be no need. We do not feel pain.
The Doctor: Yes, I hoped you realized somebody did. I imagine you have orders to destroy me?
Cyberman 1: Yes.
The Doctor: Tell me one thing, why did you order Duggan to destroy radio communication with the Earth? After all, that is why you want possession of the Wheel, isn't it?
Cyberman 1: You know our ways.
The Doctor: That doesn't answer my question.
Cyberman 2: He was instructed to destroy only the transmitting complex.
The Doctor: Oh, I see, how interesting, yes, of course. And presumably your large spaceship holds your invasion fleet, and the smaller ships can only enter the planet's atmosphere by homing on a radio beam?
Cyberman 1: You know our ways. You must be destroyed.
The Doctor: Yes, well... I was afraid you'd get back to that. Well, you'd better come in.
[The first Cyberman starts to approach, but the Doctor throws a switch, trapping it in an electric field and disabling it. The second Cyberman tries to use its chest unit weaponry]
The Doctor: You can't get through the field, you know!
Cyberman 2: You will be destroyed. Others are coming. [leaves]
Vaughn: Revive it, just enough to bring it out of its cocoon.
Scientist: Yes, sir.
[Two scientists attach magnet like objects onto the cocoon, go over to a control panel and activate a machine. About 5 seconds later the cocoon starts to move and a Cyberman comes bursting out.]
Vaughn: Hold it right there. Now, Gregory, connect the Professor's machine.
Gregory: But, sir, it...
Vaughn: Connect it!
[He goes over to the Cyberman and connects earplugs to its headphones]
Gregory: What emotion shall I enduce, sir?
Vaughn: Fear, let's see how the Cybermen will react to fear.
[Gregory turns a knob and the Cyberman starts to move]
Vaughn: More power!
Gregory: That's all there is!
[The Cyberman starts screaming and rips off the earplugs. Packer starts shooting and the Cyberman goes through a door]
Packer: It could have killed us!
Vaughn: At least we have proven that the professor's machine is useful, but get him to work on it because I want directional control and TWICE AS MUCH POWER!
Packer: It's following the others into the sewer, we can't let it do that!
Vaughn: Why not?
Packer: It will kill anything that gets in its way!
Vaughn: Good! Anyone foolish enough to be down in those sewers deserves to die!
Cyber Lieutenant: Computer reports heavy phobic energy discharge between the beacon and Voga.
CyberLeader: That means the humans have recently used their transmat beam?
Cyber Lieutenant: Yes.
CyberLeader: Time to docking?
Cyber Lieutenant: Sixteen minutes.
CyberLeader: Good. Order the boarding party to the board hatch.
CyberLeader: The heart of Voga is almost pure gold, gold is hostile to our function.
CyberLeader: Locate and destroy all animal organisims!
CyberLeader: Cybermen can survive more efficiently than animal organisms. That is why we will rule the galaxy.
Kelman: Have you killed them?
CyberLeader: Of course not, we have neutralised them. They are necessary to our plan.
CyberLeader: Once our landing is detected, the Vogons will attack in force.
Kelman: They only have light arnaments, nothing that can affect your Cybermen.
[The CyberLeader points to a map]
CyberLeader: This is the main shaft?
Kelman: Yes, this is the shaft that I explored for you. It runs right to the core of Voga.
CyberLeader: How far from the shaft entrance is the transmat receptor area?
Kelman: Just a matter of yards, I set the receptors as close as possible.
CyberLeader: Excellent Kelman, you have done well.
CyberLeader: The Humans will carry the explosives into the shaft.
The Doctor: What's your cut Kelman? Voga's gold?
CyberLeader: There will be no gold! Voga is to be utterly destroyed, and this time we will not fail!
The Doctor: Oh really?
CyberLeader: And you, Doctor, and your two friends will help us in this task. That is why your lives have been spared.
The Doctor: What great rewards have you rewarded Kelman?
CyberLeader: The matter is of no interest to you.
The Doctor: Everything is of interest to me, and Cybermen possess nothing that a human might want.;
CyberLeader: You are incorrect.
The Doctor: What is it? You've no home planet, no influence, nothing! You're just a pathetic bunch of tin soldiers skulking around the galaxy in an ancient spaceship!
CyberLeader: You speak unwisely. We are destined to be rulers of all the Cosmos!
The Doctor: Oh, I don't think so somehow. You tried that once and you were nearly wiped out.
Cyberman 2: I shall take the patrol and destroy them.
CyberLeader: No. Capture them alive. They must be interrogated first.
Cyberman 2: Leader.
CyberLeader: We also need the Time Lord to pilot the TARDIS. Go.
Cyberman 2: [to the other Cybermen] Here are your orders.
Cyberman: [regarding the Master] This is not the Doctor.
CyberLeader: Take him.
The Master: I've been looking for you.
CyberLeader: Kill him!
The Master: I'm here as your friend.
CyberLeader: Who are you?
The Master: I am the Master, and your loyal servant.
CyberLeader: I do not believe your lies.
The Master: What I have said is the truth. We've all been sent here for the same reason.
Cyberman: To fight?
The Master: To destroy each other for the amusement of the Time Lords. But you don't have to play their game. You can defeat them, gain your revenge, but only with my help.
CyberLeader: Explain.
The Master: Close by there's a Tower, the fortress of your enemies the Time Lords. It's well defended, but I can help you break in.
Cyberman Lieutenant: And, what do you ask in return?
The Master: My life. My freedom. A chance to share in your revenge. To destroy the Time Lords.
[The CyberLeader and his Lieutenant move away to confer]
CyberLeader: We will allow him to guide us to this Tower.
Cyberman: He is an alien. Aliens are not to be trusted.
CyberLeader: It is not necessary to trust him.
Cyberman: Will you give him his freedom?
CyberLeader: Promises to aliens have no validity. When the Tower is in our hands, he will be destroyed. [they return to the Master] You will guide us to this Tower.
CyberLeader: I know you are afraid. Fear has consumed your entire lives. It has enslaved you, blinded you, lied to you. The tyranny of your emotions has been absolute. But we can free you from this madness. Salvation will be yours.
CyberController: We have chosen this era carefully. Earth is already in a state of heightened emotional turmoil -- collective anxieties have never been greater. Mass hysteria will be accomplished with ease.
The Doctor: That's why you've disabled the planet's nuclear capability. You don't want anyone's finger on the big red button when you drive the world insane.
CyberController: This world is already insane. Humanity's actions are dictated by irrational beliefs and impossible desires. They wage meaningless tribal conflicts. They pollute their environment and allow their population to starve. We are not destroying this world, Doctor. We are about to save it.
Doctor Kendrick: I don't know, sir, it still might be in shock. The brain has been welded to the exoskeleton.
John Lumic: Skin of metal, and a body that will never age or die... I envy it! Do you know me? Answer, do - you - know - me?
Cyber-Prototype: You are John Lumic.
[John Lumic is having a meeting with Pete Tyler and the President, on a Cybus Airship. At first, they are all watching a video about Lumic's "Ultimate Upgrade" project.]
Lumic narration: The most precious thing on this Earth is the human brain, and yet we allow it to die. But now, Cybus Industries has perfected a way of sustaining the brain indefinitely, within a cradle of copyrighted chemicals, and the latest advances from synapse research allows cyber-kinetic impulses to be bonded onto a metal exoskeleton. This is the ultimate upgrade, our greatest step into cyberspace.
The President: I'm sorry, can we stop it there? [As Lumic, looking offended, moves his oxygen mask away from his face] I don't need the pitch. I think we all know what this "ultimate upgrade" entails, and I'm here to tell you, John: the answer is no. [Lumic hoots, derisively but quietly] My government does not give you permission, [stands up] and I think no government ever will.
John Lumic: I've prepared a paper for the Ethical Committee!
The President: Oh, come on. It's not just unethical, [to Lumic directly, seriously] it's obscene.
John Lumic: Mr President, if I might make a personal plea? I am dying, sir.
The President: I'm aware of that, and I'm very sorry.
John Lumic: Without this project, you have condemned me. My inventions have advanced this whole planet. Would you have all that perish?
The President: [dryly] You're a fine businessman, John. But you're not God. [sighs] I'm really very sorry, but I think we should end it there. [to Pete] Mr Tyler, I'll see you tonight. I think we could all do with a drink. [to Lumic, dryly] Mr Lumic. [leaves the meeting room with his retinue]
John Lumic: My everlasting children. Tell me... how does it feel?
Cyberman: We feel nothing.
John Lumic: But in your minds, what do you think?
Cyberman: We think the same. We are uniform.
John Lumic: But you think of what?
Cyberman: We think of the humans. We think of their difference and their pain. They suffer in the skin. They must be upgraded.
[After Lumic's life-support chair is damaged by Crane]
John Lumic: [strained, in pain] Help me!
Cyberman: You are in pain. We can remove pain forever.
John Lumic: No! Not yet! I'm not ready...
Cyberman: We will give you immortality.
John Lumic: I've told you... I will upgrade... only with my last breath!
Cyberman: Then breathe no more.
[The Cybermen take control of Lumic's chair and escort him away]
John Lumic: No! No! I command you - no...!
Cyberman: You are Peter Tyler. Confirm you are Peter Tyler.
Pete: Confirmed.
Cyberman: I recognise you. I went first. My name was Jacqueline Tyler.
Rose:[horrified] No!
Pete: What?!
Cyberman: They are unprogrammed. Restrain.
Pete: You're lying. You're not her. You're not my Jackie!
Cyberman: No, I am Cyber-form. Once I was Jacqueline Tyler.
Rose: But you can't be. Not her!
Cyberman: Her brain is inside this body.
Pete: Jacks, I came to save you!!
Cyberman: This man worked with Cybus Industries to create our species. He will be rewarded by force. Take them to Cyber Control.
Cyberman: Why... am I... cold?
Mrs. Moore: Oh, my God, it's alive. It can feel!
The Doctor: We broke the inhibitor. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
Cyberman: Why... so cold?
The Doctor: Can you remember your name?
Cyberman: Sally. Sally Phelan.
Mrs. Moore:[surprised] You're a woman.
Cyberman: Where's Gareth?
Mrs. Moore: Who's Gareth?
Cyberman: He can't see me. It's... unlucky... the night before.
Mrs. Moore: ...You're getting married...
Cyberman: I'm cold... I'm so cold...
The Doctor: It's all right. You sleep now, Sally. Just go to sleep. [points the Sonic Screwdriver inside the chest cavity and switches her off]
Cyberman: [to the Doctor] Sensors detect a binary vascular system. You are an unknown upgrade. You will be taken for analysis.
The Doctor: And where is he, the famous Mister Lumic? Don't we get the chance to meet our lord and master?
Cyberman: He has been upgraded.
The Doctor: So he's just like you?
Cyberman: He is superior. The Lumic unit has been designated Cyber Controller.
[A door opens, and a Cyberman on a throne-like wheelchair is revealed]
Cyber Controller: This is the Age of Steel, and I am its creator.
Cyber Controller: I have factories waiting on seven continents. If the EarPods have failed, then the Cybermen will take humanity by force. London has fallen - so shall the world.
Cyber Controller: I will bring peace to the world. Everlasting peace. And unity. And uniformity.
The Doctor: And imagination? What about that? The one thing that lead you here, imagination: You're killing it dead!
Cyber Controller: What is your name?
The Doctor: I'm the Doctor.
Cyber Controller: A redundant title. Doctors need not exist. Cybermen never sicken.
The Doctor: Yeah, but that's it! That's exactly the point! Oh, Lumic, you're a clever man. I'd call you a genius, except I'm in the room. But everything you've invented, you did to fight your sickness. And that's brilliant. That is so human. But once you get rid of sickness and mortality, then what's there to strive for, eh? The Cybermen won't advance, you'll just stop! You'll stay like this forever. A metal Earth with metal men and metal thoughts, lacking the one thing that makes this planet so alive: people! Ordinary, stupid, brilliant people!
Cyber Controller: You are proud of your emotions?
The Doctor: Oh, yes!
Cyber Controller: Then tell me, Doctor - have you known grief, and rage, and pain?
The Doctor: Yes. Yes, I have.
Cyber Controller: And they hurt?
The Doctor: Oh, yes.
Cyber Controller: I can set you free. Would you not want that? A life without pain?
The Doctor: You might as well kill me.
Cyber Controller: Then I take that option.
The Doctor: It's not yours to take! You're a Cyber Controller; you don't control me or anything with blood in its heart!
Cyber Controller: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!
The Doctor: I gave them back their souls! They can see what you've done, Lumic, AND IT'S KILLING THEM!
Cyber Controller: DELETE! DELETE! DEL-- [screams as the room is engulfed in flames]
Cyber Leader1: We are the Cybermen. The Ghost Shift will be increased to 100%.
Cyber Leader1: Achieving full transfer.
The Doctor: But I don't understand. The Cybermen don't have the technology to build a Void Ship, that's way beyond you. How did you create that Sphere?
Cyber Leader1: The Sphere is not ours.
The Doctor: ... What?
Cyber Leader1: The Sphere broke down the barriers between worlds. We only followed. Its origin is unknown.
Cyber Leader1: You will talk to your central world authority, and order global surrender.
Yvonne Hartman: Oh, do some research! We haven't got a "central world authority".
Cyber Leader1: You have now. I will speak on all global wavelengths. [The Cyber Leader's message is transmitted to viewers around the world] This broadcast is for humankind. Cybermen now occupy every landmass on this planet. But you need not fear. Cybermen will remove fear. Cybermen will remove sex, and class, and colour, and creed. You will become identical. You will become like us.
Cyber Leader1: Scans detect unknown technology active within Sphere chamber. Cybermen will investigate! Units 10-65 and 10-66 will investigate Sphere chamber.
10-65 and 10-66: We obey.
Dalek Thay: Halt! Identify yourselves!
Cyberman: You will identify first.
Dalek Thay: State your identity!
Cyberman: You will identify first.
Dalek Thay: IDENTIFY!!!
Mickey:[to Rose, bemused] It's like Stephen Hawking versus the Speaking Clock.
Cyberman: Aggression is wasteful and illogical, you will modify.
Dalek Thay: Daleks do not take orders!
Cyberman: You have identified as Daleks.
Cyberman: Our species are similar, though your design is inelegant.
Dalek Thay: Daleks have no concept of elegance!
Cyberman: This is obvious. But consider: our technologies are compatible. Cybermen plus Daleks - together, we could upgrade the universe.
Dalek Thay:[curious] You propose an alliance?
Cyberman: This is correct.
Dalek Thay:[pause] Request denied!
[The Cybermen raise their arms, guns out]
Cybermen: Hostile elements will be deleted! [they fire their guns at Dalek Thay, only to see that the energy projectiles have been absorbed by his inbuilt forcefield.]
Dalek Thay: [angrily] EXTERMINATE! [fires his gun at the two Cybermen separately; they scream in pain then fall to the floor, dead.]
Cyber Leader1: Open visual link! Daleks, be warned...you have declared war upon the Cybermen.
Dalek Sec: This is not war - This is pest control!
Cyber Leader1: We have five million Cybermen. How many are you?
Dalek Sec: Four.
Cyber Leader1: You would destroy the Cybermen with four Daleks?
Dalek Sec: We would destroy the Cybermen with one Dalek! You are superior in only one respect.
Cyber Leader1: What is that?
Dalek Sec: You are better at dying! [To Daleks Jast and Caan] Raise communications barrier!
Cyber Leader1: Quarantine the Sphere Chamber. Start emergency upgrading. Begin with these personnel. [about the Doctor] Keep this one. His increased adrenaline suggests that he has vital Dalek information.
Cyber Leader1: You are proof.
The Doctor: Of what?
Cyber Leader1: That emotions destroy you.
Cyberman: Cyber Leader1 has been terminated. Download shared files. I will be upgraded to Cyber Leader.
Cybermen: Delete! Delete! Daleks will be deleted!
Cyber Leader2: Emergency! All units will converge on the Torchwood Tower. Repeat - all Cybermen to Torchwood! [The Cybermen march out of houses in London and march off to Torchwood]
Cyber Leader2: We will retreat through the Breach; reclaim the homeworld.
[A Cyberman steps in the way; its voice sounds oddly feminine. It is the upgraded Yvonne Hartman.]
Cyber-Yvonne: You will not pass.
Cyber Leader2: What is the meaning of this?!
Cyber-Yvonne: You will not pass. [fires] I did my duty for Queen and country. I did my duty for Queen and country. I did my duty for Queen and country. [a tear of oil leaks out of her eye]
Cyberman: Incorrect: You do not correspond to our image of the Doctor.
The Doctor: Yeah, but that's cause your database got corrupted. Oh, look, look, look. Check this. [produces an infostamp] The Doctor's info stamp. [throws it at the Cyberman, who catches it in mid-air and opens and examines the core] Plug it in, go on, download.
Cyberman: The core has been damaged. This info stamp would damage Cyber units.
The Doctor:[defeated] Ah, well, nice try!
Cyberman: The core has been repaired. [the Cyberman plugs the infostamp into its chest. It sees various images of the Tenth Doctor] You are the Doctor.
The Doctor: Hello!
Cyberman: You will be deleted!
Cyber Leader: The attack is scheduled for fourteen hours. Plans for the Ascension demand a successful intervention. Is everything in position?
Miss Hartigan: That's rather dependent on you. All I can promise is to do my best.
Cyber Leader: Define the parameters of "best".
Miss Hartigan: As you would say, I will operate at maximum efficiency. And you'll keep your part of the bargain?
Cyber Leader: You will be heralded in the new age, at the Court of the CyberKing.
Cybermen: [saluting] The CyberKing will rise!
Miss Hartigan: "The CyberKing will rise", indeed. How like a man.
Miss Hartigan: Oh, that is magnificent! That is royalty, indeed! And that's quite a throne. Oh, you will look resplendent.
Cyber Leader: The chair you designate as "throne" is not intended for me. My function is to serve the CyberKing, not to become the CyberKing.
Miss Hartigan: Then who sits there? [the CyberLeader slowly turns towards her. Shocked and scared;] No! Now, just-- I think if you remember correctly, you said I was to be heralded--
Cyber Leader: All hail the CyberKing!
Cybermen: [saluting] All hail the CyberKing!
Miss Hartigan: But you promised me! You said I would never be converted!
Cyber Leader: That was designated a lie.
Miss Hartigan: [secured to the throne] You can't do this to me!
Cyber Leader: Incorrect. It is done.
Miss Hartigan: But I would have served you anyway!
Cyber Leader: Your mind is ridden with anger and abuse and revenge. These have no place in a Cybermind. Activate. Emotions have tormented you all of your life. Now you will be set free. This is your liberation.
Miss Hartigan: Oh, for the love of God, have you no pity?!
Cyberman 2: No. He is not like us. Brain and binary vascular system incompatible. They will be discarded. Other body parts may be of use.
Cyberman: You are compatible. You are intelligent.
Craig: I'm not intelligent! You don't want me!
Cyberman: Do not fear. We will take your fear from you. You will be like us. You will be more than us.
Cyberman: Emotions eradicated. Conversion complete. [there is the sound of beeping] Alert! Emotional subsystems rebooting. This is impossible.
The Doctor: He can hear him. He can hear Alfie. Oh please, just give me this. Craig, you wanted a chance to prove you're a dad. You are never gonna get a better one than this.
Cyberman: What is happening?
The Doctor: What's happening, you metal moron, a baby is crying. And you better watch out! Because guess what? Ha ha! Daddy's coming home!
Cyber-Planner: Hey, Clara! There you are. Now, a quick rundown. What's our weapons strength?
Clara: One big gun, five of those hand pulsar units, and a shiny black bomb that implodes the planet.
Cyber-Planner: Yeah, yeah, that one. Now, tell me, does it happen, possibly, to have a sort-of remote triggery thing? [she shows it to him] Brilliant. Pass it here.
Clara:[starts to, but stops] No!
Cyber-Planner: Why not?
Clara: In case you're not you right now! Or even if you are – just in case.
Cyber-Planner: Oh, don't worry. The Cyber-Planner's hibernating between moves right now. Shh.
Clara: Prove you're you. Tell me something only the Doctor knows.
Cyber-Planner: Clara... I suppose... I'm the only one who knows how I... feel about you right now. How funny you are... so funny... and pretty. [she smiles] And the truth is I'm starting to like you in a way that is more than just... [he leans in to kiss her. She slaps him]
Cyberman: Upgrade in progress.
Cyberman: Please stand by. You will be upgraded. Welcome to the Cyberiad.
The Doctor: Handles, I said, "Put me on a ship" - I didn't say, "Put me on a Dalek ship"! [The Doctor revealed to be talking to a damaged Cyberman's head attached to a stand on the console] Don't put me on a Dalek ship when I'm holding a broken bit of Dalek![hits the head with the eye-stalk, which bounces off and hits his own head] Ow!
Handles: You did not indicate a preference.
The Doctor: Use your head! [takes the head it off the stand and paces with it] It's not like you've got a lot of alternatives. They're all here. Daleks, Sontarans, Terileptils, Slitheen - and they're not even fighting, they're just parked. Why?
Handles: The message was received throughout the universe.
The Doctor: Yes, yes, the message, the message. Even I can't translate it. I mean, why is everyone here if they don't understand it?
Handles: You're here.
The Doctor: Well, you know, I'm OCD. What's their excuse? What does this message mean? [The emergency phone outside rings] Oh, no... [he puts the head back on its stand] And remind me I've got to patch the telephone back through the console unit. This is getting ridiculous.
Handles: Attention. Information available.
The Doctor: Okay?
Handles: You must patch the telephone device back through the console unit.
The Doctor: No, no. No, no, no, no. No, not now. Remind me later.
Handles: When?
The Doctor: I don't know. Just later. Just pick a time.
Handles: When?
The Doctor: I don't know. Just any old time. When you think I've forgotten.
Handles: When?
The Doctor: Just pick a random number, express that number as a quantity of minutes, and when that time has elapsed, remind me to patch the telephone back through the console unit.
Handles: Affirmative.
The Doctor: How those Cyber-evenings must fly...
Handles: Information available.
Clara: What's that?
The Doctor: Oh, just a bit of a Cyberman. He'll get us to the church on time.
Handles: I have developed a fault.
The Doctor: The organics are all gone, but there's still a full set of data banks. Found it at the Maldovar market.
[They zoom back to the snow planet]
Handles: Planet identified from analysis of message.
The Doctor: Right, cool. Go on then. Okay, tell us, what is the planet? Go on.
Handles: Processing official designation. Processing.
The Doctor: Okay, in your own time, dear. Don't rush.
Clara: So why haven't you just gone down there and had a look?
The Doctor: It's shielded. Even the TARDIS can't break through it.
Danny Pink (Cyber-Converted): You can't; I'm already dead.
Danny Pink (Cyber-Converted): The rain will not fall.
Missy: Oh? Why won't it?
Danny Pink (Cyber-Converted): The clouds will burn.
Missy: And who will burn them?
Danny Pink (Cyber-Converted): I will burn them.
Missy: How?
Danny Pink (Cyber-Converted): I will burn.
Missy: One burning Cyberman is hardly gonna save the planet.
Danny Pink (Cyber-Converted): Correct. [He turns to the other Cybermen.] Attention! This is not a good day! This is Earth's darkest hour! And look at you miserable lot! We are the fallen! But today, we shall rise! The army of the dead will save the land of the living! This is not the order of a general, nor the whim of a lunatic...
Missy: Excuse me?
Danny Pink (Cyber-Converted): This is a promise... The promise of a soldier!
Ianto: Was it an accident? [stops] Tell me you didn't do this...
Lisa: I wanted to repay him for helping me - by removing the weaknesses of his humanity.
Ianto: [horrified] What have you done? You've killed an innocent man!
Lisa: It's alright.
Ianto: It's not alright! They're going to come looking for me in a minute! If they see the body, if they find out what we've been doing-!
Lisa: I can deal with them.
Ianto: Don't you go near them![stops, tries to calm down] You didn't mean to do this. Something's happened to your mind. Just.. some kind of side effect from this whole process. It's post-traumatic. You didn't mean... [overcome with anger]You've ruined everything now![shoves Lisa away in anger. She begins to approach menacingly, but stops when Ianto turns to her again] How hard have we had to work to keep you alive? Now you do this. [touches his forehead against hers] I need you to stay in here. Rest. Don't come out unless I tell you. This can't happen again, Lisa. If you harm anyone else... I'll-
Lisa:[Cyberman's voice] Yes? What will you do?
Gwen: Whatever you... Whoever you are, I don't mean you any harm. But come any closer, I'll shoot. [Lisa knocks the gun out of Gwen's hand and grabs her by the throat.] Let me go!
Lisa: Do not struggle. You will be like me.
[Lisa forces Gwen into the conversion unit and turns it on]
Lisa: The army will be rebuilt from here. This building is suitable.
[Lisa looks at her reflection in a monitor screen]
Lisa: The upgrade is incomplete.
Ianto: You're still human.
Lisa: I am... disgusting. I have... I am wrong.
Ianto: We can help you.
Lisa: I must start again. Upgrade properly.
Ianto: For God's sake, have you heard yourself?! Lisa, please! I brought you here to heal you - so we could be together!
Lisa: Together... Yes. [Ianto looks hopeful] Transplant my brain into your body. The two of us together, fused. We'll be one complete person. Isn't that what love is?
Ianto: [fearfully]No.
Lisa: Then we are not compatible.
[she grabs Ianto by the throat and throws him across the Hub]
Lisa: This building belongs to me now. You will all be deleted!
Jack: I am sorry for what they did to you, but this ends here!
[Lisa electrocutes him; he revives and stands up]
Jack: [almost flirtatiously] Is that all you got? I'm not so easily deleted. [she does it again]

[W]ould a logical creature really behave like the Cybermen do? If not, how would a logical creature really behave? Or, to put it another way, what's the "logical" way to live? That's the question I'll be examining here by contrasting the views of philosophersThomas Hobbes, John Stuart Mill, and David Hume, asking what they'd thin of Cyberman "logic and how Cybermen might've looked if they'd been designed according to the principles espoused by these philosophers; how they might have designed the Cybermen differently, given a chance. While my examples come from Doctor Who the issue of living logically has real-world importance. After all, we all have to decide if we care about living logically or not, and if we do not want to live logically, we'd better know what "living logically" requires of us.
Greg Littmann, “Logically, What Would a Cyberman Do?”, in “Doctor Who and Philosophy: Bigger on the Inside”, edited by Courtland Lewis, Paula J. Smithka, Open Court Publishing, (2010), ch.8, p. 86.
If David Hume had designed the Cybermen to be perfectly reasonable but emotionless, they'd do nothing at all. They'd have no impetus since they'd care about nothing. Mondas would simply drift past the Earth in "The Tenth Planet." Humanscientists would no doubt eagerly attempt to contact this newly discovered form of alien life, but the Cybermen wouldn't even wave back at our telescopes. When the new Cybermen are brought to John Lumic, he'd bark orders at them only to be ignored by creatures who, lacking emotions, care no more about what he wants than about whether they live or die. Cybermen built to be reasonable but lacking emotion would be a race indistinguishable from statues, fit only to serve as shop mannequins.
