終身監禁
Both terms are used on China's mainland; however, 終身監禁 / 终身监禁 is a relatively new penal measure introduced by Amendment IX to the Criminal Law, effective since 1 November 2015, primarily applicable to particularly serious offenses, such as corruption, embezzlement, and bribery. This means that the offender must spend the rest of their life in prison, with no possibility at all to be commuted or paroled.
