Compound of 穴 (ana, “hole”) + 熊 (kuma, “bear”).[1][2] The kuma changes to guma as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
As with many terms that name organisms, this term is often spelled in katakana, especially in biological contexts (where katakana is customary), as アナグマ.
