From Old Khmer ʼaṃnāc, ʼaṃnāca, ʼaṃmnāja, mnāja (authority, power; authorisation, consent, permission), extended forms of ʼāca, ʼāc, ʼâca, ʼācca, ʼac, ʼac, hāc (to be able, capable, or competent; to allow, to permit; etc), from which Thai อาจ (àat) was derived. Compare Lao ອຳນາດ (ʼam nāt), Northern Thai ᩋᩣᩴᨶᩣ᩠ᨧ, Khün ᩋᩣᩴᨶᩣ᩠ᨧ, Modern Khmer អំណាច (ʼɑmnaac).
