Etymology
From Middle Persian lng (rang), from Proto-Iranian *ra(n)ǰ- (“to colour, dye”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *reg- (“to dye”).
Indo-European cognates include Ancient Greek ῥέζω (rhézō, “I dye, paint”) and Sanskrit रञ्ज् (rañj, “to be dyed or coloured, to redden, grow red, glow”).[1]
Doublet of اورنگ (abranjan, “bracelet”), اورنگ (owrang) / افرنگ (afrang, “throne; splendor”), رشتن (raštan, “to color, dye”).
Compare Old Armenian borrowing երանգ (erang). Cognate with Pashto رنګ (rang), Northern Luri رٱݩڳ (rańg), Central Kurdish رەنگ (reng), Sanskrit रङ्ग (raṅga).
