Το Λβιβ (ουκρ. Львів, L’viv , πολ.: Lwów, ρωσ.: Львов, L'vov, γερμ.: Lemberg, λατ.: Leopolis, αρμ.: Լվով και εξελληνισμένα εκ της γερμανικής Λεμβέργη) βρίσκεται στη δυτική Ουκρανία και είναι η μεγαλύτερη πόλη της δυτικής Ουκρανίας. Στις ελληνικές πηγές, είναι γνωστή και με τις ονομασίες Λεόπολις και Λεοντόπολις εκ της λατινικής ονομασίας. Θεωρείται ένα από τα κύρια ιστορικά και πολιτισμικά κέντρα της Ουκρανίας, αλλά και της γειτονικής Πολωνίας.

Το Λβιβ άλλαξε πολλές φορές ονομασία και επίσημη γλώσσα, ανάλογα με τον εκάστοτε κατακτητή που περνούσε από την πόλη, αντανακλώντας έτσι και κομμάτι από την ιστορία της. Στα τέλη του 18ου αιώνα, ονομάστηκε Λέμπεργκ, καθώς αποτέλεσε τμήμα της Αυστροουγγαρίας. Μετά το τέλος του Α΄ Παγκόσμιου Πόλεμου, οι Πολωνοί επανέφεραν την παλαιά ονομασία, Λβουφ (Lwów) καθώς ανέκτησαν την πόλη. Το 1939, όταν οι Γερμανοί επιτέθηκαν στην Πολωνία, η πόλη πέρασε στα χέρια της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης κι έτσι για τις επόμενες δεκαετίες έμεινε γνωστή ως Λβωφ (Львов) ή Λβοφ (απλοποιημένη ορθογραφία).
Το ιστορικό κέντρο της έχει ανακηρυχθεί από την UNESCO ως Μνημείο Παγκόσμιας Κληρονομιάς το 1998.[6]

Το Λβιβ ιδρύθηκε το 1256 από τον πρίγκιπα Δανιήλ της Γαλικίας: ονομάστηκε προς τιμή του υιού του Λέοντος, κι έγινε αμέσως ένα σημαντικό εμπορικό κέντρο. Βρισκόταν σε στρατηγικό σημείο, πάνω στο δρόμο που ερχόταν από τα Βαλκάνια και συνέχιζε αφενός προς τα δυτικά, δηλαδή σε Πολωνία, Γερμανία και Κάτω Χώρες, και αφετέρου προς τα βορειοανατολικά, στη Μόσχα.
Το 1340, καταλήφθηκε από τους Πολωνούς, ενώ το 1772 πέρασε στα χέρια των Αψβούργων και έγινε η πρωτεύουσα της Γαλικίας. Κατά το 16ο και 17ο αιώνα, η πόλη ήταν εμπορικό κέντρο, οπότε και αναπτύχθηκε ισχυρή ελληνική εμπορική παροικία, κυρίως από Κρητικούς και κατοίκους άλλων νησιών.
Όταν έληξε ο Α' Παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος, η Ουκρανία κήρυξε την ένωσή της με τη δημοκρατία που είχε συσταθεί στο Λβιβ. Το 1939 καταλήφθηκε από τον Κόκκινο Στρατό και πέρασε στη Σοβιετική Ένωση. Τον Ιούλιο του 1941, Ουκρανοί εθνικιστές οργάνωσαν δύο μεγάλα πογκρόμ, στα οποία περίπου 6.000 Εβραίοι δολοφονήθηκαν.[7] Η πόλη βρισκόταν υπό την κατοχή των Ναζί από τον Ιούνιο του 1941 μέχρι τον Ιούλιο του 1944.
Μετά την κατάρρευση της ΕΣΣΔ, το Λβιβ αποτελεί τμήμα του ανεξάρτητου κράτους της Ουκρανίας.
Οι κάτοικοι του Λβιβ έχουν προσδόκιμο ζωής 75 ετών και αυτή η ηλικία είναι 7 χρόνια μεγαλύτερη από τη μέση ηλικία στην Ουκρανία και 8 χρόνια μεγαλύτερη από τον παγκόσμιο μέσο όρο (68 έτη). Το 2010 το μέσο προσδόκιμο ζωής ήταν 71 στους άνδρες και 79,5 χρόνια στις γυναίκες. [8] Τα ποσοστά γονιμότητας αυξάνονται σταθερά μεταξύ 2001 και 2010. Ωστόσο, οι επιπτώσεις της χαμηλής γονιμότητας τα προηγούμενα χρόνια παρέμειναν αισθητές παρόλο που τα ποσοστά γεννήσεων αυξήθηκαν. Υπάρχει έντονη έλλειψη νέων κάτω των 25 ετών. Το 2011, το 13,7% του πληθυσμού του Λβιβ αποτελούνταν από νέους κάτω των 15 ετών και το 17,6% από άτομα ηλικίας 60 ετών και άνω. [9] Οι κάτοικοι είναι σε μεγάλο βαθμό ουκρανόφωνοι. Υπάρχουν πολλοί Ρώσοι και κάποιοι Πολωνοί αλλά και Εβραίοι, τόσο ντόπιοι αλλά και από άλλες περιοχές της πρώην Σοβιετικής Ένωσης.
Στην δυτική Ουκρανία από τον 14 αιώνα απλωνόταν ο Ρωμαιοκαθολικισμός. Οι εκκλησιαστικές αδελφότητες, που ξεκίνησαν ως επαγγελματικές συντεχνίες, διαδραμάτισαν σημαντικό ρόλο στην προστασία της Ορθοδοξίας στην περιοχή. Σημαντικότερη στο Λβιβ ήταν η Αδελφότητα της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου, που χρονολογείται από τις αρχές του 15ου αιώνα, η οποία παρείχε φιλανθρωπικό έργο, ενώ ίδρυσε σχολείο και τυπογραφείο.
Το Λβιβ θεωρείτο η έδρα της Ουκρανικής Εκκλησίας των Ουνιτών, πιστών δηλαδή που υπάγονται στη Ρωμαιοκαθολική Εκκλησία και την Αγία Έδρα, αλλά ακολουθούν το ορθόδοξο τελετουργικό. Το 2005, ο καρδινάλιος των Ουνιτών δήλωσε ότι η έδρα θα μεταφερόταν από το Λβιβ στο Κίεβο,[10] κάτι που αρχικά προκάλεσε αντιδράσεις και υποστηριζόταν από όσους τάσσονταν υπέρ της δημιουργίας Ουκρανικού Καθολικού Πατριαρχείου.[11]
Στην πόλη συνυπάρχουν οι Ουνίτες, η ρωμαιοκαθολική Αρχιεπισκοπή, η Εκκλησία των Αρμενίων, η Ουκρανική Αυτοκέφαλη Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία, ενώ υπάρχει και ενεργή εβραϊκή κοινότητα.
Το Λβιβ είχε πολλά μεσαιωνικά κτίρια, αλλά και δείγματα γοτθικής αρχιτεκτονικής, τα οποία καταστράφηκαν στις πυρκαγιές των ετών 1527 και 1556. Στα αξιοθέατα που σώζονται σήμερα, μπορεί κανείς να βρει δείγματα αναγεννησιακής αρχιτεκτονικής, καθώς και παλαιές εκκλησίες και προσόψεις κτιρίων από το 18ο και 19ο αιώνα. Ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζουν:
