Protein kodiran ovim genom je jedan od dva ljudska homologa Saccharomyces cerevisiae Rad23, proteina uključenog u popravak nukleotidnom ekscizijom (NER). Pokazalo se da ovaj protein stupa u interakciju sa i podiže ekscizijsku aktivnost nukleotida 3-metiladenin-DNK glikozilaze (MPG), što ukazuje na ulogu u prepoznavanju oštećenja DNK u ekscizijskoj popravci baza. Ovaj protein sadrži N-terminalni domen sličan ubikvitinu, za koji je objavljeno da interraguje sa proteasomom 265, kao i sa ubikvitinskom protein-ligazom E6AP, i stoga sugeriše da bi ovaj protein mogao biti uključeni u proteolitski put u ćelijama posredovan ubikvitinom[6]
