Ovaj gen kodira visoko glikozilirani transmembranski protein s visokim sadržajem ostataka treonina i serina u svom vanćelijskom domenu, slično široko definiranoj kategoriji proteina zvanoj mucini.
Izloženost nekih tipova ćelija antiporminskih (ozljeda membrane koja izaziva receptore proonkoze) antitijela, umrežava ovaj protein na ćelijskoj površini i izaziva tip ćelijske smrti koji se naziva onkoza.
Onkoza se razlikuje od apoptoze i karakterizira je gubitak integriteta ćelijske membrane bez fragmentacije DNK. Predloženo je da ovaj genski proizvod funkcionira kao receptor na ćelijskoj površini koji posreduje u ćelijskoj smrti.[6]
Dužina polipeptidnog lanca je 208 aminokiselina, а molekulska težina 21.531 Da.[7]
