Ovaj gen kodira protein koji je uključen u put transdukcije Ras signala, inhibiciju rasta i procese diferencijacije izazvane nervnim faktorom rasta, kako je utvrđeno u studijama mišje ćelijske linije. Kod miša, kodirani protein je u početku izoliran na osnovu njegove sposobnosti da inhibira v-Ras transformaciju. Prijavljeno je više alternativno prerađenih varijanti transkripta za ovaj gen; jedna od ovih varijanti pronađena je samo u tumorima glioma.[6]
Također se vidi da RSU-1 djeluje kao strukturni protein u integrinski posredovanim kompleksima fokusne adhezije. Snažno se veže za protein PINCH.
Dužina polipeptidnog lanca je 277 aminokiselina, а molekulska težina 31.540 Da.[7]
