在2012年,馬來西亞的攝影師Hock Ping Guek將一張草蛉的照片貼在Flickr上,結果意外引起加州食品及農業局(California Department of Food and Agriculture,簡稱CDFA)的昆蟲學家肖恩·溫特敦(Shaun Winterton)的注意,他發現Guek照片裡的草蛉是他從未見過的物種,在和其他幾名學者通信後,他確定這種草蛉一種之前尚未描述的物種,並希望Guek能提供一個樣本。之後這種草蛉的學名被命名為Semachrysa jade(英语:Semachrysa jade),而Semachrysa jade的發現,也被視為意外發現的一個例子。
