破壞型創新嘅一大來源係所謂嘅破壞型科技:想像下面幅圖;喺一般情況下,同一種產品會有高低質之分,例如電腦硬件分好多唔同型號,有啲性能勁啲有啲性能渣啲,最高質嘅硬件會攞嚟做最高級嘅用途-例子可以睇吓超級電腦;呢啲唔同質素嘅型號會一齊噉隨時間而(因為持續型創新)性能提升-下圖 X 軸做時間 Y 軸做性能,而圖入面嗰幾條色水唔同大致成平行嘅箭咀就係代表唔同質素嘅型號;不過有陣時,可能會有人作出咗啲好重大嘅發明,因而令自己嗰件科技達到嘅性能喺短時間內大幅提升(睇下圖黑色箭咀),呢樣嘢往往會搞到啲本來俾人認為係高性能嘅產品型號競爭力大跌,破壞市場嘅既有秩序[28]。
