遊居文化

游居文化（英語：nomad）或非定居民族指頻繁從一處移居到另一處、甚少定居於一地的族群，主要包括狩獵採集者和游牧者兩類，但有時還包括提供手藝或經商的非定居民族，如吉普賽人、數字遊民等^[1]^[2]。與之相對的概念是定居文化。20世紀末絕大多數非定居民族都進行游牧，據估計到1995年全世界有3到4千萬游牧民^[3]^[4]。

狩獵採集指的是依季節性規律採集野菜、野菇、食用昆蟲和野味的生活，這是最早發展出來的人類生活方式^[5]，這類社會廣泛分佈於世界各地^[6]。

游牧則指在一定的地理範圍內驅趕或陪伴一種或幾種食草牲畜，通過移動的方式間隔某種周期反覆利用牧場而獲得生活資源的畜牧生產方式，且往往需要避免牧場達到其自然承載極限^[7]。這類社會主要分佈於環境生產力較低的乾草原和沙漠^[6]。

狩獵採集指的是依季節性規律採集野果、追捕獵物的生活，這是最早發展出來的人類生活方式^[5]。

一部份狩獵採集文化後來轉向農耕或畜牧。在現代只有相對少數的人口保持狩獵採集的生活方式。

游牧則指在不同的牧場之間遷徙放牧的生活方式，與狩獵採集最顯著的差異之一在於牲畜的馴養。通常認為游牧經歷了三個發展階段，其中伴隨著人口的增長和社會組織的複雜性的增加。Karim Sadr提出了以下階段^[9]：

真正意義上的游牧：在這一階段分化出了專門的農耕人口和游牧人口。

畜牧者隨著季節的變化（春夏秋冬或者旱季雨季）而遷徙至某些固定的區域並臨時定居；而真正意義上的游牧則只取決於資源的有無^[10]。

游牧的起源

游牧是新石器革命和農業興起的結果。在新石器革命中，人類開始馴養動植物作為食物，並開始形成城市。游牧者通常與這種定居的文化共存，用動物產品（肉、皮、毛、奶酪和其他動物產品）從定居者手中換取他們無法生產的製成品。亨利·弗萊施（英語：Henri_Fleisch）初步認為，黎巴嫩新石器時代牧羊產業（英語：Shepherd_Neolithic）或許可追溯到後舊石器時代（英語：Epipalaeolithic），且可能已存在於貝卡谷地的首批牧羊文化之一^[11]^[12]。安德魯·謝拉特（Andrew Sherratt）證明「早期的農業人口主要將牲畜用於肉食，並且隨著農業逐漸適應新條件，特別是在半乾旱地區，人們探索了其他用途。」^[13]。

亞歐大陸最早的游牧社會形成於公元前8500到前6500年的黎凡特^[14]，由於土地變得越來越貧瘠，西奈半島的前陶器時代B（英語：Pre-Pottery_Neolithic_B）農耕文化被一個游牧的、製陶的文化所取代^[15]。

可能與原始閃米特人群有關的環阿拉伯游牧文化群形成後^[16]，游牧傳播至歐亞大草原，催生了顏那亞文化以及後來內亞的諸多游牧社會^[15]。

在南部非洲一些地區，歐洲殖民者的後代曾形成了一個游牧民族特雷克布爾人（英語：Trekboer）^[17]。

有一些族群通過提供某種手藝或進行貿易在各地流動。他們往往會多種語言，只進行內部通婚。其中最典型的例子有羅姆人（又稱吉普賽人）、多姆人、現代月氏人（英語：Kochi_people）、尤魯克人等。

在東南亞地區有一些民族在海上進行遊居，包括巴瑤族、莫肯人、羅越人、蜑家等。多數從事漁業，也有些從事貿易。這種生活方式有時因頻繁進出國界，加上國籍和戶籍問題，而受到國家政府的干預。

資本主義社會中的數字遊民、移工、民工等，有時也被視為一種游居者（英語：nomad），但不一定同屬於一個特定民族。
